This cast not only looks cooler but does a better job when it comes to healing bones. It vibrates to help the bones adhear together. This cast also works at a much faster past onlly making the healing process last 3-4 weeks.

The New Georgia Tech LED Sensor

To recap just a bit, the piezoelectric effect occurs when certain materials are placed under strain, for example when you step on them. The effect can also occur when materials are vibrated, as in the piezoelectric “micro-machine” under development at Europe’s Holst Centre.

 

Conventional piezoelectric devices are typically made with lead, so one of the challenges of the field today is to find safer piezoelectric materials that generate an electric charge efficiently.

The new Georgia Tech LED sensor is based on zinc oxide nanowires grown on a gallium nitride film, which function like LEDs when pressure is applied (hence the term piezo-phototronics).

Researcher Zhong Lin Wang explains:

This is a new principle for imaging force that uses parallel detection and avoids many of the complications of existing pressure sensors…When you have a zinc oxide nanowire under strain, you create a piezoelectric charge at both ends which forms a piezoelectric potential. The presence of the potential distorts the band structure in the wire, causing electrons to remain in the p-n junction longer and enhancing the efficiency of the LED.

The field of nanowires produce an image in pixels. Think of the popular children’s toy Lite Brite on a nanoscale and you’re on the right track, only among other differences the new device has a resolution of up to 6,300 dots per inch.

When written on or otherwise pressed upon, the nanowires under pressure instantly react to produce light. They also “switch off” as soon as pressure is released. According to Wang, the nanowires take 90 milliseconds or less to switch back and forth. The result is that the  image is readable in real time from the bottom of the device, and it can be processed and transmitted instantly.

The FDA's Functional Performance and Device Use Laboratory uses computer-modeling methods to determine how tweaks to a medical product's design could affect its safety and performance in various patient populations. Understanding the effect of these tweaks helps the FDA evaluate devices that are customized to an individual patient or group.

The FDA's Laboratory for Solid Mechanics focuses on how different printing methods affect the strength and durability of the materials used to make the devices. The lab's findings "will help us to develop standards and set parameters for scale, materials, and other critical aspects that contribute to product safety and innovation," FDA scientists wrote in a recent blog post.

Traditionally, ukuleles are designed with aged koa wood, and it normally takes many months to manually shape and form an instrument.

Matt was able to design a 3D model of a full sized 13.875″ (35cm) scale length ukulele in SolidWorks 2013 in about a week of his spare time.  He has been tweaking it ever since.

The material Matt used for his ukulele isABSplus.  The cost for one neck, body and set of tuning pegs was about $170 and it only took about a day and a half to print.

It sounds really good, given the fact that it is all plastic; of course experts will miss the wood. The nice and brilliant sound means there is a very good layer to layer adhesion, which otherwise would dampen the sound a lot

Prototyping musical instruments is interesting. I wonder what new ones will be created and if the sounds will be different and if they'll be intriguing enough to musicians to make in more traditional materials. My musical ear is poor and it just sounds like music to me.

Primeiro os cientistas descobriramcomo reduzir a velocidade da luz.

 

Depois eles conseguiram fabricararmadilhas de luz, criando verdadeiras "memórias arco-íris".

 

Agora já existem armadilhas de luz em chips e até aparatos que conseguem armazenar a luz mecanicamente.

 

Mas nada havia chegado perto do que fizeram Georg Heinze e seus colegas da Universidade Técnica de Darmstadt, na Alemanha.
