Are you furious? Body cues tell us more than faces

Are you furious? Body cues tell us more than faces | técnicas de comunicación | Scoop.it
As social creatures, non-verbal communication through facial expression is important in portraying emotions – and because of this, it’s interpreted rapidly and accurately.Regardless of culture, defined

facial expressions exist. It’s long been thought anger, surprise, contempt, disgust, happiness and sadness are recognised universally by humans, although even this has been questionedmore recently.

These expressions are often involuntary and their universality allows cross-cultural interpretation. Certain expressions can also be interpreted in a cross-species manner: the expression of an enraged dog prevents us from unwittingly approaching a potential danger whereas a contented dog invites our approach.

But when the emotional expression is intense – is it really that easy to interpret? A study released today in Science suggests we may actually struggle to discriminate extreme emotions.

Simple movement imitation: Are kinematic features sufficient to map perceptions into actions?

Simple movement imitation: Are kinematic features sufficient to map perceptions into actions? | técnicas de comunicación | Scoop.it
The aim of this study was to pinpoint the nature of the visual features used in the automatic mapping of perceived movements into similar executed movements, following the direct matching hypothesis. InExperiment 1 subjects imitated the lifting of one of two fingers, presented with different orientations. As predicted, stimuli which were further rotated away from the posture of the executing hand elicitedslower reaction times. In Experiment 2, we verified that this orientation effect was not a purely percep-tual effect by presenting the same stimuli but asking subjects to respond verbally. No orientation effectwas found using a verbal response. In Experiment 3, we replaced the moving fingers by two arbitraryobjects moving with the trajectories of the finger tips of Experiment 1. The same orientation effect asin Experiment 1 was observed. We conclude that in this experiment participants are using purely kine-matic features to map perceived into executed movements.

Love this article! Now that I'm starting to be a person who is attending more of these tech comm conferences, I have a deeper appreciation for what is noted in this guide, for sure. This also appeals to the "geek mom" in me as well. (Did you know that Douglas Adams had written an episode or two for "Doctor Who"? See, I told you I was geeky.)  This is a marvelously written article!
