Viewpoint: Stop Buying iPads, Please | Techy Classroom | Scoop.it

"Before you starting writing me blistering e-mails, rest assured that I am not advocating the boycott of iPads. But I'd like to suggest a little restraint--or perhaps more effective communication--around what appears to be a buying craze among our nation's schools. It seems like every month, at least, we have a new story on thejournal.com about the latest school district that has gone out and bought a boatload of iPads. Indeed, we reported in late July that Apple sold twice as many iPads as Macs to schools in Q3 2012. So I get that these devices are popular. My question is: What is the plan for using them?"

How Teachers and Technology Can Let Students Take Control

How Teachers and Technology Can Let Students Take Control | Techy Classroom | Scoop.it

"For many educators, helping students direct their own learning is a priority. Educator and author Alan November, who has been talking about ways to get students to own their learning for years, draws on his experiences as a teacher, principal and education consultant to tell stories about some of the ideas he sees as integral to education."

Diana Petschauer's curator insight, February 24, 2013 10:56 AM

Powerful Article and Insight: “We might have robbed kids’ natural ability to take control of defining their own problems by spoon feeding them little tiny problems one at a time.”

It is certainly time to get out of this educational rut of conformity, and foster learning by supporting students' curiosities, strengths, learning styles and preferences. Educational and Assistive Technology combined with excellent teaching and guidance allows students to research, create, collaborate, contribute, and foster their own learning. Instead of educating and creating "woker ants," we need to educate and encourage entrepreneurs and leaders who will compete globally when they graduate.

Before Adopting BYOD Policies, Schools Need to Do Homework

Before Adopting BYOD Policies, Schools Need to Do Homework | Techy Classroom | Scoop.it

"Bring Your Own Device policies could be a good way for schools to digitalize the teaching environment without breaking the bank. Allowing students to bring gadgets they already own and use them in class allows schools to utilize infrastructure already in place without spending money to buy tablets or smart phones to equip the entire student body. Yet, before opening up their networks to devices students bring from home, it is important that schools take steps to ensure that it’s done safely and effectively."

10 Secrets To Unlocking The Learning Potential Of The iPad

10 Secrets To Unlocking The Learning Potential Of The iPad | Techy Classroom | Scoop.it

"To establish how we can maximize the impact of the iPad as a learning tool, we first have to establish what kind of impact we’d hope to have. In this case, we’ll settle on understanding (as troublesome a term as that might be): Students being able to think critically about chosen standards or curriculum, and apply understanding in diverse, academic and non-academic environments. With that as the goal, here are some ideas."

25 Ways To Use Tablets To Enhance The Learning Experience

25 Ways To Use Tablets To Enhance The Learning Experience | Techy Classroom | Scoop.it

"When I was a kid, I dreamt about our school desks as computer screens.

How cool would it have been to be able to draw, write, and learn directly onto my own computer? As the years went on, people theorized that laptops would take over the classroom, but the price of these devices was too high for a 1 to 1 ratio. It never quite caught on in lower grade schools. Now, it is the age of the tablet. We have affordable high-powered computers that can provide all sorts of enrichment through an intuitive touch screen interface and the education world is taking notice. More and more classrooms are imagining the curriculum in the context of EACH child having his or her own tablet. Yet, some educators are still skeptical. How can a piece of technology truly enhance the learning process, without causing distraction?

Teachers or Facilitators? 10 Reasons Why Educators Should Step Out of the Way and Encourage Independent Learning

Teachers or Facilitators? 10 Reasons Why Educators Should Step Out of the Way and Encourage Independent Learning | Techy Classroom | Scoop.it

"Teacher or Facilitator: Is it just semantics? What is the first thing that comes to mind when someone uses the word, “facilitator”? Perhaps you think of words like planner, coordinator, promoter, developer, or designer. All of these definitions lead us to think of a facilitator as someone who sets up, designs, and oversees an environment that is conducive to the goal at hand but they are not at the center of the scene."
