I was struck by the use of the pronoun I in the statements. For example, how do I move the School in the direction I want? That is actually not effective at all. School is about community where conversation happens and what is held in common is communicated on an ongoing basis.

Research: Technology Is Only Making Social Skills More Important

Research: Technology Is Only Making Social Skills More Important | TechTalk | Scoop.it
Technical skills are easier to automate.

Automation anxiety reached new heights in 2013, when Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael A. Osborne, researchers at the Oxford Martin School, published a paper estimating that 47% of all U.S. jobs were “at risk” of being computerized over the next two decades. Although the jury is still out about robots stealing jobs, the pace at which AI and deep learning technologies have been advancing isn’t ebbing concerns over a future of disappearing work. As machines increasingly perform complex tasks once thought to be safely reserved for humans, the question has become harder to shrug off: What jobs will be left for people?

A new NBER working paper suggests it’ll be those that require strong social skills — which it defines as the ability to work with others — something that has proven to be much more difficult to automate. “The Growing Importance of Social Skills in the Labor Market,” shows that nearly all job growth since 1980 has been in occupations that are relatively social skill-intensive — and it argues that high-skilled, hard-to-automate jobs will increasingly demand social adeptness.

Up Periscope? New Rules for the Latest Social Media Tool

Up Periscope? New Rules for the Latest Social Media Tool | TechTalk | Scoop.it

"I’ve always been a fan of sharing openly.  I sometimes tell people that my life is an open book that no one wants to read.  The nature of my job and my position is one that interacts regularly with social media as both a way of learning and a means of sharing.

Recently, I’ve been captivated by the phenomena of Meerkat  and Periscope.  As I’ve seen throughout my many years in Ed Tech, whenever a new tool hits the market there are usually a slew of early adopters running out to grab it, figure out what it does, then figure out how we can use it for education.  I’m usually one of those first-adopters, but I’ve purposefully taken a more measured approach to the world of mobile live video streaming and becoming a “Digital Broadcaster”."

Principals: How to prepare your school for the Internet of Things onslaught

Principals: How to prepare your school for the Internet of Things onslaught | TechTalk | Scoop.it

The Internet of Things basically refers to any so-called “smart” object that uses an internet connection to enhance functionality. Today there are watches, forks, thermostats, and any number of other related devices that students or school campuses may be bringing to a network near you.

Planning for this next evolution of networking needs to simultaneously be defensive (ensuring that IT infrastructure is ready) and offensive (encouraging and leading groups outside of the IT department such as teachers and students to take full advantage of the promise of the IoT.)

According to Gartner [2], we’ve entered the “Wild West” era in IoT adoption. With that in mind, here is a quick checklist for preparing your school or district.

Eileen Otero's curator insight, July 29, 10:11 PM

With the multitude of new devices sprouting every day it is critical to have a solid infrastructure that will support multiple devices interconnected. Crucial if you want to fully develop the STEM Program in your  school.

Jim Mallams's curator insight, August 2, 11:24 AM

Getting geared up for greater use of wi-fi within schools also has the added risk of a greater quantity of "things" wishing to connect to the same system.  Forward thinking and greater understanding will need to be adopted within schools to avoid an onslaught of problems associated with a lack of capacity.

You've heard the stories -- teachers who got themselves into trouble over what they posted in social media or were, perhaps, cyberbullied by students. And then there are tales of students wasting their time using social media in class. These are risks to be sure, but when used properly, social media can be a great learning tool and a way to enhance -- not risk -- educators' professional reputations.

These are the conclusions of a new free publication, The Educator's Guide to Social Media from ConnectSafely.org. Written by Kerry Gallagher and myself, the guide answers the basic questions of how you can safely use social media in class and for professional development and how to maintain both student and personal privacy.
