The Verge
There's little doubt that most wearable technology currently focuses more on function than form — but that will have to change if the category has a hope of going truly mainstream.

Digital Cities Benefit from Broadband Investments | NTIA.gov

Digital Cities Benefit from Broadband Investments | NTIA.gov | Technology Tuesdays | Scoop.it

NTIA congratulates the winners of the 2013 Digital Cities awards, which recognize cities for the innovative use of technology to expand access to government services, promote citizen engagement, increase transparency, reduce costs and improve the lives of residents. The Center for Digital Government, a research and advisory firm focused on technology in state and local government, gave out the awards at the National League of Cities annual conference in Seattle last month.

NTIA is particularly pleased to note that a number of winning cities were lauded for projects and activities funded by our Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP). Over the past four years, the program has invested roughly $4 billion nationwide in network infrastructure, public computer centers and digital literacy training to help close the digital divide and ensure all Americans can benefit from the promise and potential of the Internet.

Better Hearing Through Bluetooth

Better Hearing Through Bluetooth | Technology Tuesdays | Scoop.it

A new generation of products that utilize the latest wireless technology are offering promising alternatives for some people with hearing loss.

The devices which are classified as a personal sound amplifier product, or P.S.A.P., are designed to amplify sounds in a recreational environment.

Unlike hearing aids, P.S.A.P.’s are exempt from Food and Drug Administration oversight and can be sold as electronic devices directly to consumers, with no need to see a physician before buying one. They come with a range of features and vary widely in price.

And while some hearing professionals have long cautioned against the devices, citing their unreliability and poor quality, many also say that a new generation of P.S.A.P.s that utilize the latest wireless technology are offering promising alternatives for some people with hearing loss.

There are limitations to who can benefit. “A personal sound amplifier is really designed for patients who have normal or near normal hearing. It’s not really designed as a hearing device to address significant sensorineural hearing loss,” said Bettie Borton, the president of the American Academy of Audiology. It is also important that those with hearing loss be screened for potentially serious medical problems that may be causing the problem.

Handheld laser spectrometer food scanner connected to your smartphone to tell what allergens, chemicals, nutrients, calories are in your food

Handheld laser spectrometer food scanner connected to your smartphone to tell what allergens, chemicals, nutrients, calories are in your food | Technology Tuesdays | Scoop.it

The TellSpec handheld device beams a low-powered laser at the food you wish to analyze, measures the reflected light with a spectrometer, and sends the data via your smart phone, computer, or tablet to TellSpec’s servers in the cloud.

Those servers use this data to deduce information about your food that is of interest to you. This information is then displayed on your computer, tablet or smart phone so you can intelligently decide if you want to buy or eat the food.

TellSpec is currently under development, after raising three times its funding goal on Indiegogo. Shipping is slated to begin in August 2014. Its US$320 price tag includes one year of free analysis of food scans, with further analyses being made available through subscription plans.

The link in the headline of this article may have gone bad. In case it doesn't work for you, here is the indiegogo fund raiser page:

I have no idea whether this is real or not, but the idea is certainly neat... advancing the idea of the tricorder, the universal instrument the heroes of Star Trek always had with them...

Buyer beware - it could be one of those things that get funded never to be heard of again. If it's real, we will know fairly soon. A few months of wait.
