FabLearn Meaningful Making Book - Free Download

FabLearn Meaningful Making Book - Free Download | Technology to Teach | Scoop.it

This book contains project ideas, articles, and best practices from educators at the forefront of making and hands-on education. The Stanford University FabLearn Fellows are a group of K-12 educators teaching in Fab Labs, makerspaces, classrooms, libraries, community centers, and museums—all with the goal of making learning more meaningful.

In this book, the FabLearn Fellows share inspirational ideas from their learning spaces, assessment strategies and recommended projects across a broad range of age levels. Illustrated with color photos of real student work, the Fellows take you on a tour of the future of learning, where children make sense of the world by making things that matter to them and their communities.

Meaningful Making is available for free as a downloadable PDF, or in print at major online retailers. Proceeds of the print edition will be used to fund future FabLearn fellowships and activities for K-12 educators.

As I interview teachers, the role of reflection is very important to their pedagogic practices. It takes on many different modes: writing, driving to and from work, listening purposefully, etc. It is not a one-size-fits-all.

Spotlight on Digital Capabilities I: What are Digital Capabilities?

Spotlight on Digital Capabilities I: What are Digital Capabilities? | Technology to Teach | Scoop.it
Digital Capabilities, can be defined as the skills and/or competencies required for living, learning and working in a digital society. The Jisc Digital Capability Framework provides a structure to help individuals understand what skills are needed and supports the development of staff and students. Jisc have produced an initial model of the framework which describes digital capability as six overlapping elements (below).

“Effective use of digital technology by university and college staff is vital in providing a compelling student experience and in realising a good return on investment in digital technology.” (Jisc, 2015)

Even today’s students need support with some areas of digital capability, particularly in an academic context, so it’s important to make sure that these needs are met. The curriculum, as the main focus of students’ attention and effort, is potentially the best route to showcase and develop digital practices.
