Soviet Bus Stops

Soviet Bus Stops | Technology Stuff | Scoop.it

"Photographer Christopher Herwig has covered more than 30,000 km by car, bike, bus and taxi in 13 countries discovering and documenting these unexpected treasures of modern art. From the shores of the Black Sea to the endless Kazakh steppe, the bus stops show the range of public art from the Soviet era and give a rare glimpse into the creative minds of the time."

Seth Dixon's curator insight, April 6, 8:47 AM

This is a delightful glimpse into a time gone by, and what makes it even more surprising is that few would expect such creative architecture to dot the cultural landscape of the old Soviet Union.  I was recently looking at a photo gallery of old Russian Orthodox churches and just like these Soviet bus stops, they are perfect subjects for classic cultural landscape studies.  Geography students can analyze and interpret the cultural, political and economic material landscape as this photographer has.  What do these elements of the landscape mean?  How does it make us re-evaluate the society that created them?

Tags: Russia, culture, landscape.

Lola Ripollés's curator insight, April 7, 2:15 AM

Las paradas de autobus siempre han sido algo interesante para diseñar. Son oportunidad para, como dicen los ingleses, "make a satement" y esta selección es prueba de ello. Herwig nos ofrece un buen muestrario de lo que se hizo en la antigua URSS.

54321ignition's curator insight, April 7, 4:14 AM

Uniformity has its place. But how brilliant would it be for communities and artists to be able to turn such utilitarian, soulless objects into celebrations of creativity!

This is a method of constructing effective PowerPoint presentations in a way that helps your audience pay attention to you and understand your ideas more fully. With Attention Method, the slides are designed to add power, emphasis, and deeper understanding to your well-scripted speech. You flip slides often so that, at any given time, your slides always support only what you're saying and contain no distracting information. Instead of one slide with several bullets, each slide should contain one idea expressed in vibrant images and minimalistic text.

4 Powerful Apps to Visually Sketch Ideas on iPad ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

4 Powerful Apps to Visually Sketch Ideas on iPad ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Technology Stuff | Scoop.it

"One of the best techniques to catch and record ideas is through using visual graphs. Data that is visually encoded is more likely to be processed by the mind in a faster and easier way. This is probably the reason why students love it when comics and graphic are included in instruction. In this regard,  Educational Technology and Mobile Learning has curated a list of some powerful iPad apps that you and your students can use to visually grab ideas and create sketchy mindmaps. I invite you to check the collection below and share with us what you think of them."

Free webinar: The Why & How of Online Captioning

Wed, Jun 26, 2013 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM EDT

With 17% of the US population facing some form of hearing loss, and online video usage increasing annually, it is imperative that content producers close caption their online videos.

"The Why & How of Online Captioning" will help content producers, educators, and policymakers understand what they can do to make sure video content is properly captioned to make it accessible. Sarah Murphy and Sam Cartsos from Frameweld will also guide you through the importance of quality transcription, accurate syncing, and segmentation to produce high-quality captions.

Via Dennis T OConnor
Lara N. Madden's insight:

Being proactive and having captioning as a step in your production is the best way to go. In higher ed, making sure all student materials are captioned according to ADA is a necessity.

Dennis T OConnor's curator insight, June 19, 2013 12:24 PM

All online instructors should be well acquainted with section 508 and accessibility needs in general.  Captioning video remains a daunting task. The more you know how to do, the more valuable and versitle you become as an online educator.

Eight Roles of an Effective Online Teacher | Faculty Focus

Eight Roles of an Effective Online Teacher | Faculty Focus | Technology Stuff | Scoop.it
Teaching face-to-face and teaching online are both teaching, but they are qualitatively different.

Teaching face-to-face and teaching online are both teaching, but they are qualitatively different. In comparison, driving a car and riding a motorcycle are both forms of transportation, but they have enough differences to warrant additional training and preparation when switching from one to the other. The same is true when faculty move from the traditional classroom to the online classroom. There are some things that the two have in common, but there are also plenty of differences. With this in mind, consider the following eight roles of an effective online teacher.

The future of learning - Sugata Mitra

The future of learning - Sugata Mitra | Technology Stuff | Scoop.it

In this talk, Sugata Mitra will take us through the origins of schooling as we know it, to the dematerialisation of institutions as we know them. Thirteen years of experiments in children's education takes us through a series of startling results – children can self-organise their own learning, they can achieve educational objectives on their own, they can read by themselves. Finally, the most startling of them all: groups of children with access to the internet can learn anything by themselves. From the slums of India, to the villages of India and Cambodia, to poor schools in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, the USA and Italy, to the schools of Gateshead and the rich international schools of Washington and Hong Kong, Sugata's experimental results show a strange new future for learning.

See Brian, there is no "cut off" for good articles, just user ability and interest to finish the read... yes, the medium helps (in your case you mentioned "listen") whatever works. In any case, believing that a user won't read an article because it is too long is a fallacy. Someone who believes that simply is not understanding their audience and not giving them what they need and how they need it in digital format.
Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com's comment, July 20, 2013 12:07 PM
As platforms change for content exposure with filters such as curation, on site like Scoop.it, writers need to remember that their readers may be looking for more information than a brief 500 word article because they have clicked through from a filtered source, not a random Google search.
