Facebook buying WhatsApp — it's not a bad price, it's a bad strategy

Facebook buying WhatsApp — it's not a bad price, it's a bad strategy | Technology & Society | Scoop.it

“[W]hat’s the point of building a stable of separate apps? There are no savings or synergies. There's a reason conglomerates went out of style.”

Leif Hans Daniel Andersson's insight:

This article raises precisely the two problems with Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp: (1) users’ preferences are fickle, making this kind of acquisition a fool’s errand, and (2) Facebook is becoming a conglomerate, an arrangement almost entirely without benefit to Facebook.

Why Trust is the New Core of Leadership

Why Trust is the New Core of Leadership | Technology & Society | Scoop.it

“Businesses have become constantly morphing configurations of modular pieces. The boundaries separating them from their employees, their suppliers, and even their competitors have become porous[,] while the ties to their home nations, even to space and time, have become tenuous. In such a world, vertical power-based leadership becomes less relevant. The key success factor becomes the ability to persuade someone over whom you have no power to collaborate with you in pursuit of a common mission.”

Apparently the iPad version is in a more advanced stage of development compared to a Windows 8 solution, meaning it will likely debut first.”

Leif Hans Daniel Andersson's insight:

The reason: Xcode and Objective-C create a superior development environment.

From Berlin in 1936 to Sochi in 2014, the Olympic Games are not just an athletic stage but a political one, The Times’s Sam Tanenhaus explains.

Twitter’s Stock Crashes Back to Reality | Technology & Society | Scoop.it
Shares of the social network dropped 24 percent on Thursday following the company’s financial results, which disclosed a slowdown in user growth and declines in usage by existing users.
