Chromebooks, Coming to the Surface

Darlene Clapham K12's insight:

Chromebooks are a great device for web applications and a great price point for education. Developers are flocking towards developing web based applications as the apps are device independent. Meaning, web applications can be run from any device as long as they stay away from "Flash" based apps. Flash based apps are not Apple friendly.  I still believe the iPAD to be the best tablet for the classroom but Chromebooks can compliment your tech in school for GAFE, LMS systems, Research and Web 2.0 teaching/learning sites.

EdTech additions should include professional learning, curriculum integration, equity, infrastructure, tech support, budget and communication planning.

Google for Education

Google for Education | Technology News | Scoop.it
Darlene Clapham K12's insight:

I thought this article was a good one to post as I often hear fears around privacy/security and advertising when using Google products. To note; Google Apps for Education and a Google domain personal to an organization is much different than a public Google account. The data is owned and services such email can be controlled by the domain or organization. I like this statement by Google:

We are committed to protecting the privacy and security of our users — and that includes students — to make sure their information is safe, secure and always available to them.

As long as Google keeps to this commitment, Education and Business will continue to embrace the product.

To note: As a Google Apps user, like any cloud or on-premise service, you are in control of who you share your information with. Always ensure you are aware of who can see or who has access to confidential information. Always keep privacy and security in the forefront of document sharing/management.
