Bringing Animal-Assisted Interventions into Autistic Classrooms

Bringing Animal-Assisted Interventions into Autistic Classrooms | Autism Spectrum Disorder, Education, Employment and Technology | Scoop.it

Animal-assisted interventions have begun to gain recognition as viable and acceptable alternative therapy approaches for a variety of psychological conditions. Elderly people who experience isolation and loneliness benefit greatly when they get a pet. Likewise, equine therapy has been shown to greatly improve emotional expression in some people unable to exhibit their feelings through more traditional forms of treatment. Other research has demonstrated that bringing a family pet into the home of an autistic child increases their willingness to communicate and interact with the animal and family members. But to date, no research has assessed how children with autism (ASD) react when animals are present in the classroom setting.

Via For The Voiceless
Angela McDonald's insight:

This article supports the theory that individuals on the Autism Spectrum benefit from engagement with animals, citing that animals create a non-threatening environment and may provide a highly powerful stimulus for social contexts in children with Autism Spectrum.  Teaching children with Autism to ‘play’ has been identified as significant in the practices of early childhood intervention programs.

A Primer on Visual Note-Taking

A Primer on Visual Note-Taking | Autism Spectrum Disorder, Education, Employment and Technology | Scoop.it

Note taking...something we want our students to do, and often it is taught as a study skill as an outline. But many of our students are visual learners. This post explores using mind maps and doodling as forms of note taking.
Research has shown that mind mapping works well "as a tool for organization, comprehension, and note-taking."

Doodling also works well for many visual learners. This post quotes Temple Grandin "the world needs all kinds of minds." If a student thinks in pictures doodling allows them to visualize connections. More information on this is in the post as are links to a number of resources.

Startups focused on untapping the high-tech potential of the ASD population are beginning to pop up with greater frequency. In addition to providing real work opportunities, this validates the potential (people are beginning to recognize the substantial strength in the ASD population for high tech).

Hopefully high-tech will be just the first of subsequent career areas in which private industry recognizes the potential of individuals with ASD.
