Dave Wood's curator insight, April 18, 2014 3:41 PM

Some really useful tips about structuring information and the impactful use of visuals.  I haven't been a huge fan of Prezi because they can be just too "busy" and disorientating when they incorporate too much spin as they move from image to image. These tips give good advice about how to keep it simple for best effect.

I've used Prezi as a way of presenting the notes from a visual group coaching session back to the participants.

36 Core Teacher Apps For Inquiry Learning With iPads - TeachThought

36 Core Teacher Apps For Inquiry Learning With iPads - TeachThought | Technology in Education | Scoop.it

"The interest in inquiry-based learning seems to ebb and flow based on–well, it’s not clear why it ever ebbs.

In short, it is a student-centered, Constructivist approach to learning that requires critical thinking, and benefits from technology, collaboration, resourcefulness, and other modern learning skills that never seem to fall out of favor themselves.

Regardless, St Oliver Plunkett Primary School has put together two very useful images that can help you populate your iPad–or classroom of iPads–with apps that support both inquiry-based learning (the second image below), and a more general approach to pedagogy based on Apple’s uber-popular tablet (the top image)."

Via Dennis T OConnor

Dennis T OConnor's curator insight, July 16, 2014 7:08 PM

Author Andrew Miller poses a what if question that resonates with me:

Moving Past "Course-Based" PBL

Due to the antiquated restraints of the education system, most educators are forced to implement PBL in a "course-based" manner. This means that the project occurs within the traditional discipline structures, where there may be integration, but learning is framed within grades and competencies. In addition, start and stop times, driven by the Carnegie unit, force teachers to start and stop a project for all of their students around the same time. What if PBL wasn't held to antiquated rules of time, space, and discipline constructs? In that ideal situation, students could be engaged in personalized projects.

Claudine Revol's curator insight, April 28, 2014 5:00 AM

The communication explosion reaches its peak when you explore the endless avenues running through TED Talks. Moreover, the title educator embodies many forms within these talks.

So it’s precisely for this reason that any educator benefits from so many of these talks. Each speaker reveals his or her passion of a view or a subject with the enthusiasm of a first-year teacher.

Using TED Talks to convey an important message or spark creativity might be more effective in teaching students than an individual agenda or preconceived notion of what should be said. Furthermore, TED Talks challenges educators everywhere to think differently and encourage the same in their students.

These are the best TED Talks for any educator because they make us laugh, warm our hearts, break down barriers, and always inspire us to dig a little deeper and push a little harder, challenging your educator perspective.

What I like about this idea is the centrality of learning as opposed to the centrality of the device. We've discovered that sharing a device have far-reaching and positive possibilities for networking, interaction, teamwork and collaboration in the formal learning environment. OLPC is an example of a notion that goes the other way - individualism, not to mention, the complexities when trying to enable young learners to focus.
