Putting Technology At The Center Of Learning

Putting Technology At The Center Of Learning | Technology in Education | Scoop.it

"Is your school still in the dark ages of #edtechDoes your school teach students with edtech only through an ICT subject, or does your school have a dedicated edtech agenda, with a strong focus on integration into the curriculum in general? As an English teacher, I can only dream of the latter, because in all of the schools around the world that I have worked in (Australia, Spain, UK), edtech takes a back seat every time. To say this is rather frustrating is an understatement, especially when most of those schools have cited the need to create independent learners as a means to achieve desirable results."

Via EDTECH@UTRGV
Harin Desai's insight:

In light of the many advantages that integrating edtech into the general curriculum offers, to continue to deny students these opportunities seems like a hard pill to swallow. Edtech is no longer in the early adopters zone; no longer in the testing zone. It is well and truly here, and senior leadership not only has to accept such a fate, but take the bull by the horns and truly embrace it for what it is worth.

For the sake of all its students, edtech must become an integral part of a school’s pedagogy.

rodrick rajive lal's curator insight, March 21, 2015 1:26 AM

Of course, more and more teachers are using technology today, and any survey will show how active technology, or interactive technology is gaining precendance over static technology. Technology is not just the projector and the white board, rather it is much more than that. While the use of powerpoint and word might be on the decline, current use of technology is aimed at developing online surveys, blogs, google spreadsheets, and google docs. My mentor checks answer sheets, and thesis papers online. She does this for multiple drafts as competently as if she were checking notebooks! The effective use of technology however also depends on back end support from the organisation and institution that encourages the use of technology. This includes software and hardware support to teachers who adhere to the BYOD concept. I have known of organisations that restrict updates of operating systems and antivirus software because they feel that updates might eat into bandwidth. Unfortunately, the BYOD devices of the teachers started to give trouble as lack of updates and patches were not available on time.

Candace Theriot's curator insight, October 19, 2015 6:28 AM

For you teachers that feel overwhelmed about the task of incorporating social media into the classroom, this is a good read. The key is to start small and gradually increase its use as  you feel comfortable. You won't be sorry. As the author points out- and I've had the same experience- it really gives a voice to those super quiet students. They never speak in class, so who knew they had so much to contribute?

This article poses many questions for the future of a quickly changing education system.  No matter how you feel about the role of the teacher in America's classrooms, you should be aware of the changes, and prepared to react to the demands of the changes.  I, for one, do believe that the future of education will see the need for less teachers- although, I feel the likelihood of no teachers at all is ludicrous.

In this article, the author "Pew Research"  reviews the impact of the internet and the exponential growth its had since the introduction of broadband capabilities. The authors use data obtained in studies to show the growth of internet users since the introduction of broadband, to try and identify the internets growth since broadband speeds have become available. Their research focuses on gaining access to internet users and broadband users. This article is useful to my own research as it describes to trend of internet today and its projected users in the future. Given this the authors show that the impact on internet users has dramatically increased since the introduction of broadband and is a major trend in today's industry, and is projected to be so in the future.

Justin Hiu's curator insight, March 26, 2015 7:14 AM

The internet and mobile phone allow more people to interact and connect differently. Within the next 5 to 10 years it will most likely become more advanced, continue to be important and able to help and provide people with information or services.
