'Connected' Generation as lonely as the elderly

Russell R. Roberts, Jr.'s curator insight, December 17, 1:57 AM

Great article exploring the pitfalls of social networking.  People are losing the ability to talk face-to-face with one another.  Social networking allows people to remain anonymous and often alone.  I find this trend in my classroom, where students text their friends all day , but can't participate in class discussions.  On top of that, many people are losing "the social graces, politeness, and empathy" that once marked an educated populace.  Our society is becoming cruder, meaner, and self-centered, thanks to devices that conceal our identity and block out the inconvenience of actually talking to people. We are becoming the mindless machines we now hold in our hands.  Aloha, Russ.

rodrick rajive lal's curator insight, December 17, 4:02 AM

Ironical, isn't it,  that the 'connected' generation is also the loneliest generation? Well, I guess this wouldn't surprise a lot of people, since the 'quality' of 'connections' is superficial and virtual. Come Christmas, what is it that excites you, getting a card from someone by post, or that bland message on your laptop wishing you a Happy Christmas? Research has shown that technological advancement in communications has not necessarily brought people closer in terms of the feel good factor or even empathy. The closeness that one felt to each other when meeting face to face cannot be replaced by social networking sites, in fact the greetings and verbal chats that you exchange on the net are superficial and lack real depth, and yes, often they are pithy remarks and recycled comments that are too cliched to really mean what they are meant to convey. Paradoxically your instruments, mobile phones, laptops, and even I-Pads have made people lonelier than ever because they remind them about how isolated they are from others by creating a virtual world which states the opposite. The virtuality cast by these devices of communication can only serve to remind people of the physical distance that exists between people today. Take for example two neighbours who live in the same appartment. What if they never got to meet each other physically? Could meeting on chat rooms and social networking sites make up for this lack of meeting between neighbours? Can virtual connections fill in the gaps that result from people drifting apart in terms of physical distances? The answer is 'No!'

Russell R. Roberts, Jr.'s curator insight, December 26, 5:33 PM

An intriguing and somewhat scary story about how retailers are using "consumer neuroscience" to profile your shopping preferences.  This technology will help businesses tailor their online advertisements to customer desires, thus making advertising more efficient and less costly.  Whether all of this personal shopping data will be secure remains in doubt.  The recent hacks against Target, Walmart, leading financial institutions, and federal agencies raise doubts  about companies keeping your private information protected.  Aloha, Russ.

Although this buying guide pertains largely to the UK and Eire (Ireland), most of the information is useful in the United States.  The article outlines several areas to consider before you order that new smartphone:

What are your needs.

How will you use the new smartphone.

Which OS is needed--Android, Windows Phone, iOS, or something else.

Your preferred provider--AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, or someone else.

Payment plans.

Good hunting for your new smart phone.

This is an area where designers and inventors have to understand the exact needs of the person using their product.

  • How can a partially sighted skier be more independent?
  • How can you make it easier for a wheelchair rugby player to right themselves after a fall?
  • These are the kinds of questions that students at Imperial College London have been trying to answer as part of the Rio Tinto Sports Innovation Challenge.
  • These prototypes could play an important role in the future of technology for disabled sportsmen and women.
  • Currently, blind or partially sighted skiers rely on guides who ski in front of them. They are linked through Bluetooth headsets.
