Google changes Internet Search (Again)!

Google changes Internet Search (Again)! | Technology in Business Today | Scoop.it
Online search could be set to change forever as Google changes the focus of its results from popularity to factual accuracy.A white paper this month outlined the company’s vision for Knowledge Based Trust algorithms which would compare search terms against their 1.6 billion fact Knowledge Vault for accuracy. The Knowledge Vault is a machine-built database of facts – the web-crawling software robots (generally known as bots, or specifically in Google’s case, Googlebots) which Google sends out to i

Russell R. Roberts, Jr.'s curator insight, March 24, 2:12 AM

On the surface, Google's "Knowledge Based Trust algorithms" will add some needed scientific and analytic accuracy to the search process.  The real issue is who controls the verifiable knowledge we are allowed to see--mankind or its machines?  Those who control knowledge control power.  Despite what noted mathematician Stephen Hawking says, artificial intelligence operating through faceless algorithms is something to be feared.  Once our robotic servants become sentient, the need for human masters will be irrelevant.  We should greet Google's well-intentioned plans with skepticism.  Aloha, Russ.

Matthew Lee's curator insight, March 25, 7:57 AM

Although broadly defined, Google's new way of searching based on factual information rather than popularity may be a form of censorship. As the article explains, Google's automated bots will gain complete control over what is deemed factual and remove their current system of ranking by popularity. Popularity certainly has its problems, yet the issues that may be caused from an automated robot mis-reading may have larger issues when Google claims its information is a factual representation of a person or company.

While all of these predictive tools can make sports more efficient and perhaps productive, they take the human element out of the equation. In sports, we relish the unpredictable hit, the sudden rally, and the win against all odds.  By taking chance and human volatility out of the game, we lose some of ourselves as well.  Will organized sports be reduced to the totally predictable outcomes illustrated by the cult classic "Rollerball"? I surely hope not.  Be careful for what you wish for--you may get it. Aloha, Russ.

The basic idea outlined by http://www.businessnewsdaily.com is to determine the social medium where most of your clients, customers, and associates assemble.  You can't be on several sites at once without spreading yourself too thin.  When I was working in commercial broadcasting, I found LinkedIn very helpful in maintaining ties with others in my field.  LinkedIn has proven very useful in my new role as a substitute teacher, linking me up with other teachers facing the same challenges I do.  I use Facebook to maintain contact with my local friends, who may not share my professional interests.  I can manage two social sites fairly well.  I found Facebook and LinkedIn most applicable to my professional and social needs.  Your mileage may vary.  Aloha, Russ.

How Big Data is disrupting U.S. Farming

Glenn Hogan's curator insight, March 25, 8:24 AM

this is what need on a planetary scale, how many people to feed. How much we can grow

Russell R. Roberts, Jr.'s curator insight, March 25, 1:20 PM

Intriguing and somewhat alarming article on how technology is redefining agriculture. While the science behind this trend is impressive, the economic ramifications are unknown.  Putting the fate of our food supply into the hands of agricultural conglomerates may not be a good idea in the long run.  Something to think about.  Aloha, Russ.

Reilley Burrows's curator insight, March 25, 10:47 PM

Most people don’t see farming as being as advanced as it is today. It’s a carefully run business that really can be extremely profitable, and that’s just what agricultural technology “ag tech” does. It has been reinventing the way farmers monitor and plant their crops, as a whole it’s booming the future of agriculture. FarmLogs is a software company that gives farm machinery the opportunity to keep track of precipitation, soil composition, etc. They don’t even manufacture the hardware, it’s all about the data being recorded. The Colorado State University offers a degree program in applied information technology in agriculture. The students that graduate from this program are picked up quickly from companies such as John Deere, Monsanto, Pioneer or the Natural Resources Conservation Academy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Agricultural Research Service. These companies are in dire need of these students as they are educated on the importance of our future. CSR is so important and demanded from our communities that these companies want to be first on the bandwagon in making their company socially responsible.

This is an article published a couple days ago so it just shows us how recent these steps have been. Monsanto does not have a good name for themselves anymore and seeing them opening entire divisions dedicated to help farmers make better decisions is positive. They bought out Climate Corps, which is a program for corporate sustainability. For how much you may be wondering? A little over $900 million! Wow! Ag tech is changing how the farming business is taking place not just in the U.S. but in all parts of the world. There is demand for climate change, healthy environments and nutritious food.

What ag tech is working on now is understanding the effects of a plant or crop getting sick and being able to detect that before seeing signs of it appearing. They are hoping to detect stress from lack of water, disease or insects due to the biochemical changes that haven’t occurred from the exterior of the plant. We’ve seen the accomplishments from auto guidance, making it easier for farmers to farm in certain circumstances. I do feel this is a credible action being made and am looking forward to seeing these changing happen in my lifetime. As mentioned in class CSR is a topic that is exploding and a great opportunity to find a career in sustainability. This goes to show how demanding companies are for these students coming out of Colorado State University with agriculture and sustainability backgrounds. Something to think about...

Chelsea Dobbie's curator insight, March 24, 9:54 PM

Even though this article is about rumours of the Apple car, there is some interesting insights into the future of electric cars.

Praveen Senaratne's curator insight, March 25, 5:31 AM

Apple is known world wide for the i-phone , it is a very successful business company. I think it would be a big jump for apple to get into the car manufacturing industry as the competition would be huge. But in saying that it will be interesting to see what they would bring to the industry in 5 years time .

Gary Yuen's curator insight, March 26, 6:31 PM

Apple has designed the iPhone, iPod Nano, iPod Touch, Apple TV, Airport Time Capsule, the iPad, iPad Mini, the iMac, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Products ranging from mobile phones, to computers and laptops, to tablets and their version of the "mp3 player", storage devices, and to set top boxes that can integrate your Apple products together.

What's next? A car? But what will it be like, will the car drive completely for you? With voice commands at will, driving to your destination with you relaxing eating popcorn?

Russell R. Roberts, Jr.'s curator insight, March 24, 2:42 AM

Sober, thought-provoking article from http://www.linkedin.com.  Here are the five reasons to avoid the Apple Watch for now:

Too much of your personal data will be controlled by one company.

Limited Features.

It won't replace that expensive Rolex as a status symbol.

You don't want to be a first adapter.

You already have something better--that new smart phone, which is a computer in a small, convenient package.

I like tech gadgets.  But, in this case, I'll take a pass and replace the battery in my old, reliable Seiko Sports 100 wristwatch instead.  Aloha, Russ.

Sound's Like The Future is here

Lucas Jackson's curator insight, March 25, 9:49 PM

This article highlights how smart watches are currently useful in your business as well as briefly touching on some things that they could do.

However limited many smart watches may be at this current time, innovators will continue to find new applications for these pieces of wearable tech. those innovations, no doubt, will occur in the next 5-10 years, impacting the lives of consumers.

Danial King's curator insight, March 26, 4:57 AM

Technologies these days are hitting the world very strong and fast. Smartphones, tablets, GPS, etc. even now they put the whole technology system into a watch and they call them smart watch. It can rate your heart beat or it can be a mini GPS. Of course smart watch is not for everyone but they are very useful once you get to know it. You can get notifications from the watch and you can also dial the number to other people straight from it, it also has a voice memo to reply to text messages or set alarms and more. It's very convenient to use because it's pretty much replace for your phone and it's always on your wrists instead of the pockets, it can be used to unlock your laptop and the good thing about smart watch battery life is it can run on a single charge for three days when compared to all the smartphones which are only last for a day. I think smart watch is very useful to use and the design is very fashion to wear.
