Russell R. Roberts, Jr.'s curator insight, August 29, 1:26 AM

I sincerely hope this "tweaked cyanobacteria" can help replace fossil fuels.  If this technology can be marketed at a decent, competitive price, this country may be able to be fuel self-sufficient.  That's a worth goal worth pursuing.  Aloha, Russ.

The Tesla Battery Heralds the Beginning of the End for Fossil Fuels

The Tesla Battery Heralds the Beginning of the End for Fossil Fuels | Technology in Business Today | Scoop.it
While wind and solar power have made great strides in recent years, with renewables now accounting for 22% of electric energy generated, the issue that has held them back has been their transience. The sun doesn’t shine at night and the wind doesn’t blow year-round – these are the mantras of all those opposed to the progress of renewables.

Russell R. Roberts, Jr.'s curator insight, May 9, 1:10 AM

I think the prediction of fossil fuel demise is a bit premature. But, the promise of long-term battery power is within our grasp.  The work done by Tesla, NASA, and other high-tech organizations is making 24 hour battery power a reality.  The problem is developing sufficient capacity and storage for batteries, so they can be used at any time.  For now, battery technology has to do a little more to displace those buried dinosaurs and ancient fern forests beneath the surface.  Of course, all of this could change if oil becomes a precious commodity because of a Middle East war or a collapse of the social order in Southeast Asia.  When oil isn't worth the risk, then battery and other alternative power sources will take their rightful place in the energy pantheon. Change, whether caused by human folly or by evolution of technology will come.  Oil will be replaced, but not right now.  Aloha, Russ.

Jerome BESSON's curator insight, July 30, 1:47 AM

“Facebook’s announcement draws a sharp contrast to Amazon Web Services, which has failed to explain how it will power its newly announced data centers in Ohio and India, despite the company’s commitment to use 100% renewable energy,” Greenpeace senior climate and energy campaigner David Pomerantz said.

Amazon's Ohio data center, for example, relies on American Electric Power, which generated 83 percent of its electricity from coal.

Russell R. Roberts, Jr.'s curator insight, July 31, 10:11 PM

Kudos to Facebook officials for looking ahead!  More companies should adopt this philosophy.  We're too dependent on fossil fuels as it is.  This makes sense environmentally and economically.  Aloha, Russ.

Has Tesla Cracked the Grid Energy Storage Problem? | Technology in Business Today | Scoop.it
Has Tesla finally done it? Has it finally plucked out the long-standing thorn in the side of renewable energy – the need for cost-effective ways to store electricity? With the announcement of the Powerwall storage system, Elon Musk & Co would certainly like us to think that they have. There is a lot to admire about the Powerwall, at least as it was first presented. Russell R. Roberts, Jr.'s curator insight, March 2, 11:11 PM

At last, some practical energy saving tips without the shrill rhetoric found on both sides of the Global Warming debate...Most of these suggestions are common sense practices that can be implemented the next time you shop. For example, replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), get a free energy audit for your home, choose energy efficient appliances, reduce waste and recycle cans, plastic, and paper, eat less meat, and use less hot water. These steps are small, but when you add millions of people doing the same thing, our quality of life may just improve.  Of course, the elephant in the room is a constantly increasing population with only limited resources to feed, clothe, and house it.  Population control schemes have had limited success, but a concerted effort to limit our population would certainly put less strain on our environment.  To do this, humanity will have to look at life in a different way and reject old cultural, social, and religious beliefs that once preached "go forth and multiply." This will be a difficult and perhaps impossible task.  Perhaps that's why humanity has resorted to wars and endured pestilence to control its populations.  We ignore the obvious warnings at our peril.  Although I'm not a religious person, the final chapter of The Book of Revelation may be what awaits us if we don't put a damper on our expansion.  The prophets of old may have said it all.  Aloha, Russ.
