Skills Converged > Team Building Exercise: Take it Without Touching

Skills Converged > Team Building Exercise: Take it Without Touching | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it

This is a simple but fun team building exercise most suitable for outdoors. This exercise can also be a fun activity for kids. You can run competitively and give a prize to the winner. It helps to train people on staying focused while being totally aware of their environment and the dynamic changes. A winner must be good at predicting what others are going to do while keeping them guessing on he would do.

5 Reasons Why Gaming Is An Effective Way to Teach Empathy (And Other Skills)

5 Reasons Why Gaming Is An Effective Way to Teach Empathy (And Other Skills) | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it

How do sports and video games teach kids to be empathetic?

Video games and gaming are great motivators. Games can also be a rewarding activity for social and mental well-being. Healthy Minds Canada (HMC) has developed a prototype for a new mobile game, designed to develop empathy and improve life skills in young gamers (aged 9-16).  HMC believes that in order to promote a more understanding culture and to stop bullying, improving empathy is essential in de-stigmatizing all mental health issues and changing users’ off-line behaviour.

Are You Ready to Lose Control?

Are You Ready to Lose Control? | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it

Control: It’s the essence of management. We’re trained to measure inputs, throughputs, and outputs in hopes of increasing efficiency and producing desired results. In a world of linear processes, such as in the factories of the Industrial Age, that made sense. But in today’s knowledge economy, where enterprises are complex, adaptive systems, it’s counterproductive.

Vellum acts as a reading list  for your Twitter feed, finding all the links that are being shared by those you follow on Twitter and displaying them each with their full titles and descriptions.

This flips the Twitter model, treating the links as primary and the commentary as secondary (you can still see all the tweets about each link, but they are less prominent).

Vellum puts a spotlight on content, making it easy to find what you should read next.

Think back to your days as a student. Do you remember that special teacher who sparked a new interest for you? How about one who motivated you to do your very best?
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

As we head toward National Teacher Appreciation Day on May 6, here are five ways technology can help empower teachers so they can devote more of their time and energy to student learning.

Let the computer cover the basics – Whether using an online curriculum or “flipping the classroom” with video lectures that students can view outside the classroom, teachers can open up class time for group projects and engaging discussions to help students apply what they’ve learned, and provide for more small group or individualized instruction.

Don’t make testing an event – It’s important to know which students have grasped concepts and which need more help – and a test or quiz is an efficient way to find out. However, there is no reason to wait until the end of the week, month, or unit to know whether students have mastered their lessons.  Assessments and tasks that are built into online learning programs make it possible for educators to continually monitor progress so they can modify lessons and address problems quickly.

Use real-time data to personalize instruction – Increasingly, teachers are blending their lessons with online curriculum to customize the learning experience for each student in a way that simply hasn’t been possible in the past. This lets teachers more easily empower students who are ready to move ahead, keeping those kids challenged. And for students who are struggling, teachers can help with more one-on-one time so students can make up lost ground.

Schools have a difficult task to teach children of different abilities, backgrounds, and learning styles.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

When children are not able to learn within the expected timetable, it is assumed that the problem is the child rather than the teaching.  What is the prescription?  More of the same.  Summer school.  Retention.  Do it over and over again.  And if the child is still not learning, he just becomes discouraged, assumes he is stupid, and loses interest in school.  Sadly, even when children are referred for special education services, they often get the same basic reading strategies, just presented in a smaller group.

Schools have a difficult task to teach children of different abilities, backgrounds, and learning styles.  The number of children with neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD) and learning disorders continues to be on the rise.  No longer can general education teachers simply rely on the special education teachers to educate children with learning differences.

So what can we be doing better to reach more of our children and celebrate their unique gifts and abilities?  A multi-sensory approach to learning is one that can benefit all children.
