University leaders need to look beyond their research superstars

University leaders need to look beyond their research superstars | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
Few vice-chancellors planning for life after REF will want to dispense with the services of good teachers, says Tony Kelly (Will this be the end of inspirational lecturers? Sad day for academia, if so.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Interesting article about wise cuts in educational employment vs. unwise cuts. There are many considerations mentioned here but the following gets to one of the key considerations.

Excerpt:

With student satisfaction making a significant contribution to league tables – second only to REF outcomes in many calculations – vice-chancellors will want to accommodate both the gifted teacher who is not a research star, and the gifted researcher who cannot relate to students. The balance has traditionally been in favour of the latter.

No university is going to turn out a Fields medallist no matter how low his student evaluations, but this situation is likely to change in the coming period due to shifting demographics – student pool fell by some 60,000 this year – and from rising student expectations.

With employment prospects (another important factor in league tables) being so uncertain and unattributable in a recession, few universities planning for life after REF will want to dispense with the services of good teachers.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Great read to remind us that people and students are unique. Uniqueness is something teachers need to never forget.

Excerpt:

Audio and sequential learners follow directions, said Haas, a former physics teacher turned data analyst. A sequential learner will, for instance, reach for a set of instructions before putting together a model airplane. They typically perform well on timed tests, are organized and think in words rather than images.

Visual and spatial learners, on the other hand, grasp the end result before understanding steps to get there. A spatial learner would visualize the finished model plane, Haas said, and then create ways to put the toy together. These learners often have poor handwriting, dislike public speaking, do not budget their time well and perform poorly on timed tests.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

I agree with Tony's assessment. My assessment as a classroom teacher and world traveler is the same. I will point out that most countries are far behind us in general education matters. I will also point out that in my opinion our haphazard, imperfect education methods are as much a breeding ground for creativity and innovation as they are for failure. Great successes have a counterpart of being often way out numbered by failed attempts before achieving the great success.

This article provides a great  overview and video about these 7 key 21st century skills:

Questions To Frame Your Thinking

What does an environment need to be like in order to promote creativity?

What does it need to have, and how should it be arranged?

Luckily, there isn’t only one right answer. A creative environment can be as unique as you are!

Imagine you were given a room in your home and an unlimited budget (the type of budget a classroom teacher could only dream of). Then, you were told that you needed to create a space for yourself. The space needed to be somewhere you could do your work and create plans for your class, as well as relax and learn (maybe with some PD on Twitter…).

What would you create? Probably not a desk in the middle of the room, surrounded by grey walls and industrial lighting, with windows that don’t open and an old cork-board outlined with used-up rainbow borders. At least, I would hope you could do better than that!
