Allan Shaw's curator insight, September 26, 2014 6:38 AM

Only learners do the learning! They must recognise the value of the work, because learning can be hard work at times. Unless there is a good answer to the question, 'Why does this matter?' then student engagement will struggle and thus learning will tend to struggle. Get ready teachers, because this question will become more common as a curriculum or classroom question and the answer needs to resonate with the learners.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Not a bad way to inspire future visionaries. The world needs really fresh, new answers for the unique problems and conditions students today will face in the short and long term. Old traditional answers will not work this time unless we role our lifestyles back to the 1950s. We need to ideas, even those that we thought were working in the past were not really what we needed. We were not thinking of the impact and trade-off our creation would have on altering the life, livelihood and even the existence of species in what has turned out to be the very near future. "genius hour", complemented by informed studies and research, is just what we need to inspire more people to creatively think and wonder.

Tech Times
Zuckerberg hits the classroom with one lesson in mind and it's not social ...
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

GET this folks...the same old answer are not going to work in the future when it comes to jobs and many other issues. He did fail to mention something....His company uses very few bodies but it took the efforts of the globe to make him billions and the vast majority of those that filled his servers with data and permission to access them as a user gave their time but did not get paid and that is something we all need to start thinking about.  Tech is important but how is a business model like that going to put food on everyone's table. This is a question more of us need to start asking and looking for answers about.

Excerpt:

"If you start with the assumption that everything in the future is going to be different than it is now, then it's not true that anyone else knows any more than you guys do about what's going to work in the future,'' Zuckerberg said.

Valencia also pressed Zuckerberg about Facebook's initiative to bring Internet connectivity to the billions of people around the world that don't currently have it.

"One way to, over time, create more peace and connectedness and a more functioning kind of world is to make sure everyone is exposed to all these different things," he stated, saying that certain ideas and global cultures are stifled by a lack of online sharing.

The overall message of the presentation was that it just takes an idea to start something big, and that the idea of something big can be daunting to those starting in technology.

"It's pretty daunting if you look at some big product that you want to build or change that you want to make in the world," Zuckerberg said. "You can get scared and decide that it's really hard to get started doing that. But everything big starts small."

Open Content Program (The Getty)

Open Content Program (The Getty) | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
The Open Content Program provides free, unrestricted access to the Getty's digital resources.

Why Open Content?

The Getty adopted the Open Content Program because we recognized the need to share images of works of art for free and without restriction, so that all those who create or appreciate art—scholars, artists, art lovers, and entrepreneurs—will have greater access to high-quality digital images for their studies and projects. Art inspires us, and imagination and creativity lead to artistic expressions that expand knowledge and understanding. The Getty sincerely hopes that people will use the open content images for a wide range of activities and that they will share the fruits of their labors with others.

What's in Open Content?

Currently, there are more than 87,000 images from the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Getty Research Institute available through the Open Content Program, including more than 72,000 from the Research Institute's Foto Arte Minore archive, which features photographs of the art and architecture of Italy over 30 years by German photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1913–1988). Other images include paintings, drawings, manuscripts, photographs, antiquities, sculpture, decorative arts, artists' sketchbooks, watercolors, rare prints from the 16th through the 18th century, and 19th-century architectural drawings of cultural landmarks. Over time, images from the Getty Conservation Institute will be added, as well as more images from the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Getty Research Institute.
