Excerpt:

The second major shift emerges with the uptake of the social networking sites and participatory technologies. Now, we no longer talk about a single literacy but multiple literacies. Literacies take many forms and encompass a varied body of social skills and cultural competencies. In their popular white paper "Confronting The Challenges of Participatory Cultures" Jenkins et al talked at length  about the development of these new literacies and how they come to shape the new learning forms that take place in the virtual space. According to Jenkins et al, these new literacies involve several social skills that are developed through collaboration and networking. These skills include :

Visual: Half-brain Teaching : STEAM Vs STEM

Visual: Half-brain Teaching : STEAM Vs STEM | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
November 13, 2014
The age-old debate on the division of the brain into sections each one responsible for a certain set of skills and tasks overshadows much of the theories and pedagogy in education....
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This suggest that people are left or right brained dominate. The fact is that we use both. We are educated mainly in a way that targets the left. Most people remain highly illiterate in regards to training themselves to be more aware of the functions of the so called right side of their brain and the way it gathers information and how the right side has power over their behavior. Advertising, marketing and the arts target towards the right side of people's highly unconscious, form of data collecting through all the natural senses they have available to them. That side of the brain collects information and data at lighting pace so to speak and by far quicker than words and rational thought can process or often control.

The successful marketer of anything realizes that the highly and directly motivating unconscious input into the right side of the brain is very hard for the left side to override. All normal people use both side of their brains. We just don't teach very much about how to be aware of, in touch with or how to beware of the roles both sides play in our conduct and learning. The argument could be made that he right side is the side that gathers all information and data. The right side is the intuitive side that uses our five senses to gather all information.  The left side is the rational side that is used to process usually only a small portion of that information consciously and then leaves far too many people just unconsciously, reactive to the information that does not seem to fit in the rational boxes so well. This explains why people start smoking even though everyone knows it is bad for them these days....or we pay $200 dollars for a label that in our mind connects us to the images and feelings we see presented in visuals and emotional sounds and scenes even though we rationally know we are not really going to suddenly be the person in that ad.....The moment we see that shoe or shirt with that logo we are in touch with that feeling it gave us to see, hear or smell or feel that idea that goes with it and if it was desirable we want to act on it  and own that feeling and it nearly impossible to rationally override for those that do not learn to be aware of the intuitive part of the mind and how to use it to work with the rational. This is what makes people engage in behavior, vote for ideas or take risk that is not in their best interest even when they know better. This is also a powerful reason many buy what they don't need and fail to lead the life they intended to live.

This is now a world in which we are bombarded with advertising and visual and sensual targeting that affects all areas of our life.  It is important that education start actively teaching people how to understand and be more aware of how the rational and the intuitive side of our brains must work together. Education trains toward the left, rational side to the degree that it even allows and even encourages people to disregard and deny their intuitive side. This means it encourages them to deny or not seek or become aware of their own intuitive guidance. That is a downright dangerous way to educate people as it leaves them vulnerable to those that know how to target intuition to manipulate conduct and choices.
