Plethora of educational gaming sites that are geared towards elementary students. I've used http://funbrain.com and http://abcya.com before with my Kindergartners. A center-orientated system could be effective in getting kids to rotate from computer to computer, entrenching them in different subjects such as reading, writing, spelling, and math.

How Turner sunsets help study pollution - IOL SciTech | IOL.co.za | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it

London - He was one of Britain’s greatest ever painters, his works lauded for their atmosphere and visual mastery.

Scientists, however, have found another reason to marvel at the pictures of J.M.W. Turner – they believe they will help them to assess how polluted the world once was. They say landscapes by artists such as Turner accurately recorded the chemicals in the air.

The key, according to the atmospheric physicists, is in the colour of the sunsets they depicted.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is  information that ties art and science together. Artists have always captured information to communicate from one generation to the next about the times they lived in and this is one of the more vital purposes of art. The media and messages may change but this vital purpose of artist as communicators within a society and across the ages never will cease.

Hough: Great leaders are human, too
Springfield News-Leader
The idea was to individualize curricula and differentiate instruction to fit each student's abilities, interests and learning styles.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Remember when…

"Not too long ago many schools across the country developed curricula based on Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences.

Believing that all students have special talents, "Multiple Intelligence" schools sprang up to help children discover their unique strengths and interests. The idea was to individualize curricula and differentiate instruction to fit each student's abilities, interests and learning styles.

Reading Gardner's now classic book "Frames of Mind" (1985) and his many subsequent works might cause one to consider today's education reform from a different perspective.

What curriculum is best and for whom? How can we assess students' potential and then help them realize it? What is most important for our children's health and welfare?

Great leaders all have one thing in common: They are human, excelling at some things and struggling with others." (excerpt)

Say goodbye to public schools: Diane Ravitch warns Salon some cities will soon have none | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
"Why destroy public education so that a handful can boast they have a charter school in addition to their yacht?"
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

Newark has not had local control of its schools for almost 20 years. They’ve been under state control…

And the teacher’s contract is null and void when it comes to all these school closings. So as they close schools they’re going to shed union teachers, crush the teachers, lay off people and replace them with Teach for America.

Do you believe that public education would be better off if Teach for America were to shut down?

I think that public education would be better off if Teach for American trained young people to become assistant teachers, and they would then come into the classroom to help experienced teachers, learn their craft, and then spend two years as teachers. Obviously, they’re not going to shut down. They’re one of the wealthiest organizations in America… Look at their board of directors — wow. They got $50 million from Arne Duncan, $100 million from Eli Broad and friends, and $100 million from the Walton Foundation. They’re not going away, but what they need to do is, first of all, to make sure that when they send these young kids in the schools that they have some training. Five weeks of training does not a professional make. So they’re coming in unprepared for the challenges they face.

And then after two years, most of them are gone. They should make a commitment to three years, and the first year ought to be a year of preparing to learn how to teach.

Johannesburg - Teaching has hit YouTube and it is creating a better understanding in the classroom.

This is the changing face of education in the digital age and while it might be easy for tech-savvy pupils, the challenge is for their teachers who sometimes find it difficult to let go of their older, tried and tested methods of teaching.

But there are a growing number of teachers who have taken this challenge head on and are discovering new possibilities and learning to navigate through the pitfalls of technology in the classroom.

Rametsi Senoamadi, a natural sciences teacher at Randfontein High School, says his classroom is “chalk-dust free”. He uploads the study material onto a website which he created (www.naturalsciences grade9.weebly.com) and posts notes on Facebook.

    Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Here is a cool sample video of Go Pro. It also shows how many people are trying to fund creative work using direct crowd sourcing. This way they are not actually having to have a major studio or content middle man company market everything. This has given folks like these guys a chance to get projects done and even earn a little to a lot of income while they do that. This also is a good demo of why it is so important to keep the internet open and neutral as Berners-Lee designed the WEB to be and recently has been calling for ways to protect this multi-media connections so that the world can continue to create and communicate together freely. He is recently recommending a global Bill of Rights for the internet, that addresses openness, privacy and neutral use and accessibility.

Berners-Lee and many other innovators, developers and designers  are also very concerned with revisiting the current copyright laws that were designed to favor media publishers more than the creators of media or public interest when it comes to building on what is the public store house of knowledge for the betterment of mankind.

Technological designers have found these current copyright laws put ideas and knowledge they could be building new ideas on in a lifetime lock box out of reach to many other minds that could arrive at new answers if allowed more access this stockpile of knowledge affordably or to sometimes freely use these ideas and knowledge sooner. These creative people feel there are ways to design a process to ensure that creators and even their promoters still reap direct gains from these creations without locking up the use of ideas that others people can build out from to create something new and different. This is a media policy issue that matters to all creative people.

By the way, feel free to help these guys out with their project.

These #McConnelling Videos Take Mitch McConnell's Latest Ad To A Whole New Level | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
We'd like to thank Jon Stewart for bringing #McConnelling to the world.

On Thursday's episode of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," Stewart put out a call for viewers to take the latest campaign ad from Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) -- wh...
    Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

I usually keep politics on another scoop.it page, but this shows the power of visual images when combined with music and performing arts better than anywhere I've seen. In under five minutes the whole mood of a silent ad of Mitch McConnell changes completely just by showing the same right images and changing the sound track. The take away messages are left on the viewer strongly and all bring different emotions.  I remember them all. Mitch might want to think of hiring Jon's crew!

It also shows the power of media to bring social change (good or bad) and control consumer behavior by playing out the messages the sponsor wish and pay to plant into the senses and responses of the viewers. Playing them over and over really makes them reach their intuitive target. This shows also the necessity of media and visual literacy because rational thinking and analysis is difficult even for those that understand  how the sensual elements are sent directly to our senses to go fast and directly to the brain through those senses so that no rational control part can catch them too easy and change the intent of the message ad makers want people to intuitively respond to. So if you can watch something and also look at all the sides other then the ones the ads and articles plant with emotional loads or half truths and manage to think rational and still agree with it then it may be truth…or maybe it is just a very, very good ad or article or presentation that got you so deep you can't see past it to find the truth.

Higher Order Questions: A Path to Deeper Learning | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
Watch a lesson that helps students build higher order thinking skills. This middle school literature lesson brings in the ELA Common Core by teaching how to analyze how a section in text fits into the overall theme and to cite textual evidence to support analysis of text.
    Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

You may or may not like common core. These videos however might be inspiring and informative. I however do not see anything new here…just repackaged and renamed. This is certainly not new, Teachers have used questions and formats like this for years and critical thinking was hardly just invented. I find the teaching in the videos highly motivating and would really recommend searching them and finding some that inspire you. The ideas for classrooms are always very welcomed by all teachers, while spending precious funds and teaching for standardized tests allows little time for experimental ideas that might not be on the test they must pass to succeed in  order to graduate to the next text.

Teachers rarely get the opportunity or time to sit in on someone else's classroom. Here is a way to do that and never have to leave your class or fund raise to attend a professional development conference. This again is a wonderful way to get the most from sharing and learning through technology. Learning is certainly for the professional as well as the students they teach. Thank you to the many great teachers  and students from around the world in these videos for sharing their stories, inspiration and work. They are truly continuing the great tradition of teaching and motivating youthful thinkers.

10 Reasons Visual Content Dominates 2014 - The Wishpond Blog | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it

10 Reasons Visual Content will Dominate 2014 What marketing strategies will we focus on in 2014? What will we leave behind? This article takes a look at the rise of visual content - and why 2014 will dominate in 2014:

    1. 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual. Visuals are processed 60,000X faster in the brain than text.

    2. Videos on landing pages increase average page conversion rates by 86%.

    3. Visual content is social-media-ready and social-media-friendly. It’s easily sharable and easily palatable.

    4. Businesses who market with infographics grow in traffic an average of 12% more than those who don’t.

    5. Posts with visuals receive 94% more page visits and engagement than those without.

    6. 60% of consumers are more likely to click on a business whose images appear in search results.

    7. Clear, detailed images carry more weight than product information or customer ratings say 67% of consumers.

    8. Visuals show your products without telling people about them. This allows viewers to make their own decisions without feeling pressure from your business.

    9. Visuals express ideas quickly - in a snapshot. This breaks through the overwhelming clutter of online content.

    10. Visuals are becoming easier and easier to create as photo editing tools become more accessible

    Via Martin (Marty) Smith
    Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is one of the best reasons for art education. A visually or media illiterate citizen or consumer is very apt to be manipulated or make unwise choices.

    From Wikipedia:

Visual literacy includes in addition the ability to understand visual forms of communication such as body language, pictures, maps, and video.Evolving definitions of literacy often include all the symbol systems relevant to a particular community. Literacy encompasses a complex set of abilities to understand and use the dominant symbol systems of a culture for personal and community development. In a technological society, the concept of literacy is expanding to include the media and electronic text, in addition to reading and writing.
