The White House Summit's Missed Opportunity Chronicle of Higher Education (subscription) (blog) For genuine success with low-income students—even high-achieving low-income students—faculty members must engage in a serious transformation of pedagogy...
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Fine article!

Can it be said better than this? Excerpt:

"• Campus culture matters more than money: Experience has taught us that the biggest issue with low-income students is not money—important though that may be—but campus culture. Too often, universities and philanthropists believe that the only real problem is leveling the tuition playing field, and all else will be OK. Wrong. All the scholarship support in the world will not help a student to succeed on a campus that is indifferent or hostile to a person whose life experience has been profoundly shaped by conditions of poverty. Plunging an impoverished student into the rampant materialism and hidebound traditionalism of an elite campus without a serious plan for adaptation can prove deeply harmful to both the student and the institution."

Smart technology boom in students requires parental intervention | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
The increasing availability of mobile phones and tablets to school children is forcing schools to reconsider their approach to web filtering as students abandon controlled campus networks for public wireless.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

It seems parents should be the main ones intervening and staying aware of their child's online and tech activities. There is no teacher with them more than one class period a day and even friends do not have the same level of access as family members do to one another.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This begs the question that if alternatives are worth doing in charter schools then why not just do them in our current public schools as well. Are the students we send there lab rats? Are those pushing  charter schools just "betting' funds on them? Are they selling goods they are trying out or is it a product they know is worth tax dollars? Maybe Charter school alternatives are not so great after all if we can't support the idea well enough to put this in mainstream public schools why spend good tax dollars on somepeople's experimental business plan. Those alternative education programs should be good enough for public schools if we are spending tax money on them. Why not go mainstream for everyone or is the plan really to get away from everyone else and try to leave them in underfunded programs to make "alternatives" look better? Sorry my proofing is a bit off....my computer will not let me edit this entry today....so i'm just going to have to let it be with some errors I need to correct later if it allows adjustments.

Technology teacher positions being eliminated in Baltimore County

Technology teacher positions being eliminated in Baltimore County | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
The Baltimore County school system is eliminating the jobs of more than 100 technology teachers in elementary schools next fall, saying it is time to move away from teaching technology in a computer laboratory.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

I agree that teachers should be given time opportunity and equipement to apply tech and teach it as tech applies to the content areas. I do not agree that the tech teacher should be required to act as a co-teacher "helping" with research for some other content area.Helping to train other teachers and everyone paid extra full salary to do the job training is a good idea as long as time is actually alloed to do that. Normal proceedure for too many is the teacher/classroom recieves new tech or materials and it is up to the teacher to somehow figure out and self teach while at the same time preparing for classes and teaching classes.Tech needs to be extended to include coding and media making not cut as a specialized study. I'm reading that coding is a new universal language all will benefit from learning. We all know langages of all types are learned best at early ages.We will see how this goes.....but small scale closely observed studies may not always reflect the daily mundane application of these ideas.

Sound advice here on how to build critical thinking skills into the curriculum from an early age to support the growth of the next generation of digital social scientists & citizen researchers. This is great but still leaves us with a problem about how to equip established social researchers with an understanding of the potential & challenges in social media research, especially those who serve on IRBs granting access and clearance via ethics panels to new research projects.
