OECD - Creative Problem Solving: Students' Skills

OECD - Creative Problem Solving: Students' Skills | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
PISA 2012 Results: Creative Problem Solving: Students’ skills in tackling real-life problems (Volume V) examines the extent to which 15-year-olds have acquired the problem-solving skills needed in the 21st century.

Via Ana Cristina Pratas
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Too often we teach students answers when life throws them questions. We need to teach them problem solving skills. Classes can get messy when you let students take more control and responsibility for their situations which is what is needed to enable students to learn and problem solve.

Problem solving activity is tricky to do and stay on standard test taking plans. Problem solving involves failing while discovering the best resolution.  In today's classroom there is little time to waste on risk taking behavior like exploring the best answers, realizing the best question or struggling to find either of those. All that diverts from the standardized testing that everyone's fate hangs on.

So Long, Snow Days? School Groups Push Telecommuting For Students

So Long, Snow Days? School Groups Push Telecommuting For Students | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
Feeling additional pressure because of snow days this winter, some school districts are looking at e-learning to keep kids in class virtually.

Via Chris Carter, Mark E. Deschaine, PhD, Christine Heine, Brandi McWilliams
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

I think this idea could work just fine. We need to put our money into ensuring each student has computer and internet access before we waste money on any more standardized test. That is putting the cart before the horse. Education and learning materials and equipment need to be enhanced before testing unless there are funds to spend on both. The testing materials should be part of the instruction we purchase or design anyway and not separate with separate cost. Instruction should not be a guessing game.

There is nothing wrong with teaching the tests if the test covers the core people are required to know. No one will learn everything. Learning for growth, creativity and compulsion is discouraged if we waste tons of time and worry wondering what it is someone wants us to know. There is no time to follow your own passion while you second-guess what someone else decided to ask you.

Any training and development company in industry that is worth their salt and contract know that. As a matter of fact in the SAT or ADDIE process of training design and development you always do task analysis first, then design your standards and end objective goals to match the task analysis. After this your test instruments are designed to meet those requirements then your educational objectives are decided and materials developed to ensure each one you train reaches the goals and standards. The whole thing is always an iterative and non-ending process.

Setting learning and education in too much concrete with over weighted standardized test is counter-productive and pricey. The training materials need to be modernized and brought alive with new multimedia techniques and links to real reports, findings and research. Students should be encouraged to create and even code their own work and curate their research.

Snow days would offer great self-directed learning project time. This should be pre-decided by student contract and selection with specific training in class on how to conduct independent study.

I read Wendell Berry's work and he asks many of the same questions. Values are what give us strength and courage (the French valoir). They ground us in our working and living giving us a sense of purpose and trueness. Trueness is the moral compass we seek in making sound ethical choices in daily life.
