Privatizing Schooling and Policy Making: The American Legislative Exchange Council [ALEC] and New Political and Discursive Strategies of Education Governance (Anderson & Donchik, 2014) // Education... | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it

Abstract

"In this article, we examine the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) as an example of a unique node within larger policy networks composed of new policy entrepreneurs (e.g., venture philanthropists, think tanks, private “edubusinesses” and their lobbyists, advocacy organizations, and social entrepreneurs). These new policy networks, through an array of new modalities of governance and political and discursive strategies, have come to exert an impressive level of influence on public policy in the last 30 years in the United States. We describe and analyze several model education bills that ALEC has promoted and describe the political and discursive strategies ALEC employs. We found that these strategies, which are employed by corporate leaders and largely Republican legislators, are aimed at a strategic alliance of neoliberal, neoconservative, libertarian, and liberal constituencies with the goal of privatizing and marketizing public education."

How to Design Your Own MakerSpaces - Daily Genius

How to Design Your Own MakerSpaces - Daily Genius | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
What are MakerSpaces? Makers build, fix, and create. They are students, teachers, tinkerers, cooks, technology buffs, architects, crafters, performers, hobbyists, builders, artists, engineers, scientists, and writers. They use the MakerSpace to solve real life problems with access to tools and materials. A MakerSpace is not confined to a school setting but can also be a community space like a public library where community members off all ages, means, and abilities can design, prototype, and create original works. On March 18th and 19th, we celebrated New Jersey Makers Day, and I had the opportunity to visit a number of different Maker events in various communities. These are some themes and big ideas that I noticed in my travels. Perhaps these big ideas will inspire you to create your own MakerSpace makeover in your own classroom, school, or local community.

How to Bring Design Thinking to Your School for Free (Without Hiring a Fancy Consultant) (EdSurge News) | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
"I keep reading about these design thinking consultants who will come to your school and help you redesign your programming. But to be honest, those things are way too expensive, and our budget doesn't really allow us flexibility for that. Please, please give us some cheaper options. Can we just do it ourselves? Are there good people to talk to or places online to go for stuff?"--Broke in Cincinnati

A frequent blogger and makerspace advocate, Fleming also is author of the bestselling Worlds of Learning: Best Practices for Establishing a Makerspace for Your School.

Fleming spoke recently with EdTech Managing Editor Jena Passut about makerspaces and how she makes the best spaces for the kids in her school.

Designers of Their Own Learning - @KrissyVenosdale #makered | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
When we ask kids to read Chapter 3, we’re telling them what to know.

When we fill our boards with objectives that say “You will learn ____,” we’re explaining to them the very basis for the lesson we are delivering.

When we give out a packet of worksheets that have fill in the blank answers, multiple choice, and matching, we’re telling kids to choose answers from our choices.

When we ask kids to spend days and weeks in silent classrooms answering test questions, we’re telling them that knowing stuff is more important than their voice.

But when we ask kids to design?

7 of the Best iPad Cart Options for Schools - Fractus Learning | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
It’s a normal occurrence to enter a classroom and find each student working diligently on an iPad or other tablet device. An iPad cart or tablet cart is a convenient way for schools to safely and conveniently store and charge all of those devices. iPad carts vary in capacity and features, but most lock to keep tablets secure, are ventilated to prevent overheating when charging, and have wheels or casters so that the entire cart and all of the devices can be moved from classroom to classroom. Convenient cord organization systems are a nice addition and some carts have cool features like card reading locks and the ability to sync of all the iPads to a single Macbook.

Maker Education and Social-Emotional Development - User Generated Education @JackieGerstein #makered | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it

"Maker education, when planned around skills acquisition, can enhance social-emotional development.

Self-Awareness: Making in all its forms requires a full range of skills including cognitive, physical, and affective skills. Given this need for multiple and diverse skill set, effective and successful making comes from an accurate assessment of one’s strengths and limitations as well as having optimism and confidence that challenges can be overcome within the making process. Example questions related to self-awareness and making include:

     * What strategies am I using to increase my awareness of my emotions and how they influence my performance during the making-related tasks?

     * What are my strengths given this particular making task?

     * What are my limitations and how can I use my strengths to overcome them? ..."
