Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Too often we teach students answers when life throws them questions. We need to teach them problem solving skills. Classes can get messy when you let students take more control and responsibility for their situations which is what is needed to enable students to learn and problem solve.

Problem solving activity is tricky to do and stay on standard test taking plans. Problem solving involves failing while discovering the best resolution.  In today's classroom there is little time to waste on risk taking behavior like exploring the best answers, realizing the best question or struggling to find either of those. All that diverts from the standardized testing that everyone's fate hangs on.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

The educator’s role has always been to model and demonstrate effective learning, but  somewhere along the line, the major role of the educator became that of content and knowledge disseminater.   Now in this information age content is freely and abundantly available, it is more important than ever to assist learners in the process of how to learn.

The world is changing at a rapidly accelerating pace. What you learn today can quickly become outdated. HOW to learn, though, is a skill that lasts a lifetime. When you think about it–it makes sense for us to be taught how to learn before we are taught any specific subject matter. But rarely, if ever, does that happen (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/gurbaksh-chahal/learning-how-to-learn-wha_b_4790668.html).

Beth Dichter's curator insight, April 12, 6:44 AM

Do you have a set of dice in your classroom? If not  you may want to locate a set. This infographic provides 36 brainbreaks for students, all based on rolling the dice. Although many of these activities may not be new to you the fact that the decision is made by rolling two dice is a great way to engage your students, and to teach them a lesson in probability. In fact, if you choose to do this over a period of time you might also record each activity and at some point discuss probability with them. You might also print a copy. This would allow one student each time to roll the dice, and the other to read out the brain break.

Please be aware that you will need to fill in a form to access the graph. If you find this version too difficult for your students you will find a simpler version of it at http://www.yourtherapysource.com/files/Roll_Some_Fun_Freebie2.pdf

Lee Hall's curator insight, April 14, 4:27 PM

We all need a break now and then, but for some reason teachers think students can sit still longer than teachers will when they are in a class. Beth Dichter says, "If you find this version too difficult for your students you will find a simpler version of it at http://www.yourtherapysource.com/files/Roll_Some_Fun_Freebie2.pdf "

How not to think about the humanities - The Stanford Daily

How not to think about the humanities
The Stanford Daily
Basically, we benefit from learning how others have dealt with proximate dilemmas, desires, fears, joys and problems, and in doing so we feel a little less alienated, particular and peculiar.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

Thomas Piketty’s new book, Capital in the 21st Century, which has been called “one of the watershed books in economic thinking” by Branko Milanovic of the World Bank, amasses 200 years’ of data to show the inevitability of ever-increasing economic inequality.

The plight of the 99-percent will only grow larger. So in a terribly ironic sense students are forced by this “market” to abandon the humanities precisely at a time when we need the critical, introspective, philosophical, aesthetic and ethical judgment that the humanities nurture in us.
