10 Intriguing Photographs to Teach Close Reading and Visual Thinking Skills

10 Intriguing Photographs to Teach Close Reading and Visual Thinking Skills | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
Ever want your students to slow down and notice details when they read — whether they’re perusing a book, a poem, a map or a political cartoon? Young people often want to hurry up and make meaning via a quick skim or a cursory glance when a text can demand patience and focus.

Closely reading any text, whether written or visual, requires that students proceed more slowly and methodically, noticing details, making connections and asking questions. This takes practice. But it certainly helps when students want to read the text.

We’ve selected 10 photos from The Times that we’ve used previously in our weekly “What’s Going On in This Picture?” and that have already successfully caught students’ and teachers’ attention. These are some of our most popular images — ones that may make viewers say “huh?” on first glance, but that spark enough curiosity to make them want to dig deeper. (Please Note: You can quickly learn the backstory about any of these photos by clicking the link in each caption that takes you to the original post, then scrolling down to find the “reveal.”)

Below, we offer ideas from students and teachers who have engaged with these images for ways to use them, or images like them, to teach close reading and visual thinking skills.

Interactive Storytelling and Coding

Interactive Storytelling and Coding | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
Knowing that coding is an important skill for students to learn, I knew I had to come up with ways to teach coding skills. However, I knew nothing about coding, so I needed to learn a few basics. With my new found knowledge, I came up with so many fun ideas for integrating coding into my literacy lessons. Which is why I am so happy I get to share one of the first ever coding lessons I incorporated into the literacy curriculum AND it is just in time for the Mentor Text Lessons to Warm Up Your Winter Link-Up using the book Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner.

when coding came on the scene, I wasn’t sure how I could incorporate it into the literacy standards. Fortunately, I learned about interactive storytelling and coding using Scratch Jr., but there isn’t a lot of ideas or products to help me implement interactive storytelling with ease.

The surprising habits of original thinkers

The surprising habits of original thinkers | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
How do creative people come up with great ideas? Organizational psychologist Adam Grant studies "originals": thinkers who dream up new ideas and take action to put them into the world. In this talk, learn three unexpected habits of originals -- including embracing failure. "The greatest originals are the ones who fail the most, because they're the ones who try the most," Grant says. "You need a lot of bad ideas in order to get a few good ones."

Bringing Art Back With Technology | Edudemic

Bringing Art Back With Technology | Edudemic | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
With continued budget cuts, a greater focus on math and reading education, and an enduring emphasis on standardized testing, the future for art education in public schools around the U.S. may seem bleak. However, the growth of technology and software over the same period can provide educators with novel and inexpensive options for new art teaching methods.

From simple drawing apps to complex video-editing software, technological advancements can enable arts education for a fraction of the price of what it cost even 15 years ago. For resource-strapped public schools where art classes are the first thing on the chopping block, these technologies are key to providing the balanced education that most benefit students.

Last night I moderated a panel discussion about Instagram in the classroom. It was my first time doing anything that cognitively demanding in 3 months. There were a few guffaws (for example you will need fast forward 3 minutes because I didn’t realize we were live), and I was not able to moderate the Twitter or Youtube live chat.  Nonetheless, it was a really good conversation and the panelists, Kayla Delzer, Aviva Dunsiger and Jam Gamble were awesome.
