Sharing the display of your smartphone can be tricky. While there are some Android devices that support HDMI, the best option for smartphone owners on all platforms is usually to employ some screen-mirroring software (particularly straightforward for iOS users) and view the current app on a HDTV or monitor. There is another way though, and that is to…

What Makes an ‘Extreme Learner’?

What Makes an ‘Extreme Learner’? | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
It’s the hunger for learning rather than raw intellect that distinguishes Extreme Learners from the gifted. Intensely motivated and harboring a breadth of interests, they also consider ignorance a temporary and reparable condition.

Cueva-Dabkoski is considered an “Extreme Learner,” a designation applied to just 12 individuals by the Institute for the Future, for her radical and gutsy approach to learning. Extreme Learners are self-directed, wide-ranging in their interests, comfortable with technology, and adept at building communities around their interests.

“Extreme learners aren’t so different from everybody else,” said Milton Chen, a fellow at the Institute for the Future and advocate for education reform. “We picked people who are extreme in their passion for learning.” They are also willing to go their own way when traditional educational institutions interfere with their pursuits.

Giacomo Bono's curator insight, Today, 12:46 PM

Social interactions with close others, technology, and our motivation to master environments all work together to change us. An important process not represented in this otherwise cool model is close relationships with older peers and adults (i.e., community) who know kids and the learning task at hand well enough to use the ZPD to support their learning.

HC's curator insight, Today, 7:08 PM

An interesting article on the Activity Theory where "people (actors) use external tools (e.g. hammer, computer, car) and internal tools (e.g. plans, cognitive maps) to achieve their goals." This article explores how this theory can be applied in education, "...teachers should be aware that everything in the classroom has a cultural and social meaning. "

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, Today, 7:15 PM

A useful framework that can move well into higher education to inform learning design.

Why Kids Need to Move, Touch and Experience to Learn - Mind/Shift

Why Kids Need to Move, Touch and Experience to Learn - Mind/Shift | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
When students use their bodies in the learning process, it can have a big effect, even if it seems silly or unconnected to the learning goal at hand. Researchers have found that when students use their bodies while doing mathematical storytelling (like with word problems, for example), it changes the way they think about math. “We understand language in a richer, fuller way if we can connect it to the actions we perform,” said Sian Beilock, professor of psychology at the University of Chicago.
