Curate and Create Learning Resources

If we want to have students seek out other information from sources other than the teacher, then we must make sure those resources are available. Many teachers using the flipped classroom approach already have created or found these kinds of resources. However, think broadly about the word resource.

People are resources, texts are resources, and community organizations are resources -- to name just a few categories. We have to be comfortable not always knowing the answer, and instead suggesting we find the answer together through the vast amount of learning resources that we have at our disposal.

Try curating these resources before, during, and after a unit. Work with students as well to create a culture where the answers are everywhere.

Stone tools made by our ancient ancestors have been dated to be around 3.3 million years old. Scientists have stated that this is a “new beginning to the known archaeological record.” Scientists now believe that the dawn of culture has been pushed back by 700,000 years. This is a much earlier sign

How Blended Learning Changed My Classroom Experience: A Student ... - EdSurge

How Blended Learning Changed My Classroom Experience: A Student ... - EdSurge | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
At Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School in San Jose, CA, students are experiencing a new style of learning. Blended learning has provided students with the chance to learn and accumulate information at their own pace.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

It takes a gifted teacher to implement self pace instruction. A certain type of personality is required to enable this instructional model so it isn't for every teacher, gifted or not. Personally, I like the rhythm of a combination of self-pace and lock step. With multimedia however a class room teacher might offer links to the content that continually has to be repeated to each student. That is the material that is best suited for lock step delivery in a large group, so as to avoid teaching burnout.

Teachers in the past wisely assessed that they just could not teach the very same item 30 to 70 times a day individually and thus taught the topic all must eventually know to everyone at once, ready or not. Not everyone is ready for that content at the same time and that is why lock step fails many students. This is the problem self-paced content answers. That way each student can access new content as they individually need it. That would allow individual students to stay focused on topics that needs more time  rather than forcing each  student to move at a lockstep pace without the each student soundly completing comprehension of the earlier study..

A teacher that can facilitate online, or with other self pace content allows those that have completed  a concept to move onward when they are ready.  When self paced is forced on everyone as the only answer it often fails because not all teachers and students can handle this style of teaching and learning. Content is not always best served by this style and time restraints and today's testing push make self-paced difficult to manage. Delivering packets or links without great teacher prep is also a problem when implementing self-pace instruction.. Some of these considerations were the problems when it was pushed in the 70's as an across the board answer for learning.. Self-paced instruction and learning is not "THE" answer, but "An" answer to teaching and learning.  Self-pace instruction  works best as one of many tools in the teaching and learning tool box to be used as needed by those attracted to, or skilled with this technique  of teaching and learning..

The 21st Century Learning Initiative ~ Review: The Myth of Homework and The Case Against Homework

The 21st Century Learning Initiative ~ Review: The Myth of Homework and The Case Against Homework | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
Promoting a Vision, Knowledge, Experience and a Network
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is a review of this book. At a glance I would suggest it is a book all teachers and parents should read. There is such a push to hang everything on a test these days that teacher, administrators and parents might need to reflect on the value and outcome of using homework to increase student performance.

Excerpt:

His findings are strongly supported in their book by Sara Bennett, an attorney, and Nancy Kalish, an educational writer and editor, both of whom are friends and – more importantly – parents. “The Case Against Homework” was published just a few months after Kohn’s in 2006. It uses a wide raft of experiences to show how too much homework is having a negative effect on our children’s achievement and development. The reader is given practical advice on not only how to manage homework, but also to negotiate with teachers and work towards achieving policy changes by schools’ education systems.
