Young
Children
and the Arts:
Making
Creative
Connections

Today, unprecedented national attention is being focused on early childhood development. Policy makers, educators, and concerned citizens across the country are working to ensure that all children have the early experiences necessary for health, well-being, and optimal learning. In 1997, two White House conferences focused on early childhood—one on recent research on brain development, and a second on early childhood care and education. Both helped to fuel increased public conversation and action, from the halls of government to grass roots community organizations. Lawmakers in at least 20 states have voted to expand funding for programs that serve preschool children. Officials in some states are supplementing federally-funded Head Start programs with state dollars because only 40 percent of the children eligible for the program are actually receiving services. Other states have appropriated funds for pre-kindergarten programs for all children, regardless of family income. The current focus on early childhood is by no means limited to the three- to five-year-olds who are typically thought of as “preschoolers,” or to school-age children between the ages of five and eight. Early childhood education begins the moment a child is born. Recent neuroscientific research on infant brain development has provided reinforcement for what psychologists and educators have long believed: that experience in the first three years of life has a powerful influence on life-long development and learning.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
Take a few minutes to view this! You won't regret it! It is an older video, but sadly the info hasn't dramatically changed yet! Note to incoming Education Secretary, the anti-public school pusher for private venture investment and an underminer of public and community owned schools: We can innovate just fine in public schools. No need to sell off our community ownership of schools. Promote and Allow real public ownership of innovative publicly owned charters or even traditional local schools to experiment with innovative ideas and research as well. Interrogate more between higher university and primary and secondary even when they are not located close to one another. Actively involve students and communities in serious planning... not just passive participation....Educate not just students but families how to be involved in lifetime learning. Community schools can be a public held source on ongoing growth and development... Put money into real serious and inspiring professional net working and training and development. Somethings teachers need to learn are only taught in professional classes offered only when they are teaching kids and cannot attend....Fix that! Put not only tech in school but make sure it is a package deal with inspiring and well developed training.

Watch an Artist Turn Scrap Metal Into Animal Sculptures

Watch an Artist Turn Scrap Metal Into Animal Sculptures | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
Here’s a nice little portrait of artist Alan Williams and how he turns random metal parts like the keys of a typewriter or a bicycle pedal into these intricately designed sculptures of animals. It’s definitely cool to see him work and transform recycled man-made machine parts into creatures that exist in nature because you get to see how his art connects one world with the other.

Developing Leadership Is Recognized as Improving Educational Outcomes!

Developing Leadership Is Recognized as Improving Educational Outcomes! | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
"School Leadership Interventions Under the Every Student Succeeds Act: Evidence Review", a Rand Corporation report included these five findings regarding school leadership:

School leadership can be a powerful driver of improved education outcomes.
Activities designed to improve school leadership demonstrate positive impact on student, teacher, and principal outcomes, based on research that is consistent with ESSA evidence tiers.
ESSA expands opportunities for states and districts to use federal funding for initiatives that strive to improve the quality of school leaders.
ESSA's evidence tiers provide a framework for using evidence in school leadership policy and practice.
ESSA's framework with tiers of evidence, coupled with the U.S. Department of Education's non-regulatory guidance, strongly emphasizes the use of evidence in setting direction for improving school leadership and prioritizes more-rigorous evidence.
