27 Good Math Apps for Elementary Students | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
Here is a handy visual we have been working on over this weekend. This is a collection of some good math apps curated from iTunes App Store specifically for elementary students and young learners. The apps provides students with a wide variety of educational games, hands-on activities, and challenging exercises to help them enhance their math skills and develop solid mathematical thinking. Links are included in the table under the visual.

'Under-connectedness' hurts students with only mobile internet access at home

'Under-connectedness' hurts students with only mobile internet access at home | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it

News, voices and jobs for education professionals. Optimized for your mobile phone.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
Many of our students have only phone plans with data caps, get grounded from their phones or break them and can't afford new ones.... but most all students have only mobile phone service to get internet and often that will be the only household connection. Teachers are able to assign wonderful tutoring links online and set up programs that help students learn to self manage their work and present it online. Too many students are not able to join that rich online learning supplemental plan.

3 Powerful Resources for Teaching Media Literacy

3 Powerful Resources for Teaching Media Literacy | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
Last February, I received a heartfelt note from one of Scope’s advisors expressing concern about media literacy in this era of rampant fake news. Could I, he asked, address media literacy in an article in Scope? He wasn’t the only one to ask. Many of you have reached out to me recently about your need for media literacy materials. "How do we equip students with the tools they need to be savvy, skeptical consumers of digital content?" is a question I hear again and again.

Web Literacy for Student Fact Checkers

Web Literacy for Student Fact Checkers | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
This is an unabashedly practical guide for the student fact-checker. It supplements generic information literacy with the specific web-based techniques that can get you closer to the truth on the web more quickly.

We will show you how to use date filters to find the source of viral content, how to assess the reputation of a scientific journal in less than five seconds, and how to see if a tweet is really from the famous person you think it is or from an impostor.

We’ll show you how to find pages that have been deleted, figure out who paid for the web site you’re looking at, and whether the weather portrayed in that viral video actual matches the weather in that location on that day. We’ll show you how to check a Wikipedia page for recent vandalism, and how to search the text of almost any printed book to verify a quote. We’ll teach you to parse URLs and scan search result blurbs so that you are more likely to get to the right result on the first click. And we’ll show you how to avoid baking confirmation bias into your search terms.

The Big List of Board Games that Inspire Mathematical Thinking | Calli Wellsch | MindResearch.com

The Big List of Board Games that Inspire Mathematical Thinking | Calli Wellsch | MindResearch.com | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it

When a board game is presented as a math game, I am always eager to try it out!

Unfortunately, in many cases I find the math in these games are too straightforward with cards of math problems for players to solve, or numbered spaces to count. These games are usually far from fun, only allowing kids to practice math facts or formulas. They lack the opportunity for the player to choose from different actions, strategize or even plan ahead.

The math in board games doesn't have to be so straightforward! Math is not just about numbers and formulas, and games is one way we can experience the beauty of math all around us.

There are many fun board games that integrate deeper mathematical thinking into the gameplay. These games help students develop skills such as multi-step problem-solving, spatial reasoning, pattern recognition, resource management and much more.

Here's my list of go-to board games for engaging students in math through games. I've arranged them loosely by recommend ages, but many of these games play great whether your students are six years old or seventeen years old (for example, Tsuro).

Teaching In 2017: A Checklist For 21st Century Teachers - TeachThought

Teaching In 2017: A Checklist For 21st Century Teachers - TeachThought | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
What are the kind of things a 21st century teacher needs to know and be able to do? What about 21st century students? What education technology works, and what is a waste of time? What would a checklist for 21st century teaching look like?

Does “21st century teaching” even make sense to use as a phrase anymore? If not, do we just say “teaching”? Does that fit our needs to innovate our collective profession to meet a modern circumstance?

These are among the questions today’s teachers have to face daily–in the classroom, mass media, professional development, and more. These conversations can get complex, opinionated, stuffed with rhetoric, and downright overwhelming at times. In response, Sylvia Duckworth has made consistent contributions to this conversation by creating colorful illustrations that communicate many of these ideas in easy-to-skim, easy-on-the-eyes, tempting to pin and share graphics.

Teen Writes Children's Book To Encourage Other Girls To Code

Teen Writes Children's Book To Encourage Other Girls To Code | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
When Sasha Ariel Alston pursued her love for coding, she noticed there were never many girls ― especially girls of color ― pursuing it, too. That’s why she decided to write a children’s book to encourage girls to learn about coding and STEM fields at an early age.

Alston is a 19-year-old Pace University student getting a major in information systems and a minor in marketing. She spent two years writing Sasha Savvy Loves to Code, a kids’ book about a 10-year-old who becomes interested in coding, just like Alston.

“The purpose of the book is just to get girls interested in coding and to provide basic coding terms,” she said.

The Power Of Visuals In E-Learning

The Power Of Visuals In E-Learning | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
The majority of people won’t watch a video that is more than four minutes long, will click away from a page after just five to ten seconds if it doesn’t hold their attention, and check their smartphones an average of nine times in an hour. This really has an impact on learning. The traditional classroom format is quickly becoming redundant, as technology and e-learning takes over as the preferred means of training and development.

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy - | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
The Padagogy Wheel is designed to help educators think – systematically, coherently, and with a view to long term, big-picture outcomes – about how they use mobile apps in their teaching. The Padagogy Wheel is all about mindsets; it’s a way of thinking about digital-age education that meshes together concerns about mobile app features, learning transformation, motivation, cognitive development and long-term learning objectives.

Universal design for learning in curriculum planning and lesson design

Universal design for learning in curriculum planning and lesson design | Technology in Art And Education | Scoop.it
Does the everyday learning environment provide a range of supports to cater for student variability?

Universal Supports are those that exist in the learning environment, which the teacher does not have to think about or plan for daily. Thus, saving teachers time and energy.

They typically support Finance Assignment Help which are common to several learning activities. Universal Supports include the physical, emotional, and learning environment in the classroom as well as well-established systems and protocols that are so embedded they are simply ‘the way we do things around here’.
