Lectures Aren't Just Boring, They're Ineffective, Too, Study Finds

Lectures Aren't Just Boring, They're Ineffective, Too, Study Finds | Technology for school | Scoop.it

Are your lectures droning on? Change it up every 10 minutes with more active teaching techniques and more students will succeed, researchers say. A new study finds that undergraduate students in classes with traditional stand-and-deliver lectures are 1.5 times more likely to fail than students in classes that use more stimulating, so-called active learning methods.

We're About to Tell You the Secret to Creativity, and You May NOT Want to Sit Down - InformED

We're About to Tell You the Secret to Creativity, and You May NOT Want to Sit Down - InformED | Technology for school | Scoop.it

The study found that walking indoors or outdoors similarly boosted creative inspiration. The act of walking itself, and not the environment, was the main factor. A person walking indoors – on a treadmill in a room facing a blank wall – produced twice as many creative responses compared to a person sitting down.

Anne Whisken's curator insight, May 8, 4:51 PM

'It’s important to note that, according to the study, the type of creativity affected by walking is associated with “divergent,” rather than “convergent,” thinking. In other words, walking benefits creative brainstorming but not the kind of focused thinking required for single, correct answers.'

The Backchannel: Giving Every Student a Voice in the Blended Mobile Classroom

The Backchannel: Giving Every Student a Voice in the Blended Mobile Classroom | Technology for school | Scoop.it

Over 12 years ago, as Todd Curtis and his teaching partner tried to get all of their eighth graders engaged in class discussions, they noticed a trend. Though students talked freely outside of class, they became silent in class. As an experiment, they jury-rigged their email system into a backchannel.

This is something I had not thought a lot about, but with the growth of Blended Learning throughout our systems of learning, it makes so much sense to include this in our planning.  This article gives some great examples and ideas about tools and backchanneling for our learners.  I think this has great promise for reinforcing adult learning as well.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, May 13, 1:49 PM

One thing that would be helpful is not to force digital technologies on good teachers. They need support and it can be provided by providing them with opportunities to plan their professional development. They other thing that is important is do not assume that resistance is being tech shy. I resisted, but am hardly tech shy. What I resisted was the external experts who thought they knew more about my teaching and students than I did.
