Technology for independant life long learning
Technology has immensely changed our life since last decade or so. Our modern e-life is dominated by technology and will continue to dominate in the coming years. Learning is no longer associated with typical classroom where a group of students or learners must physically meet together regularly and there must be a teacher, tutor, mentor, or facilitator. Learning is open and almost free for everyone even though e-discrimination exists because of technological backwardness or lack of infrastructure. So, knowledge of accessible technology is a key to success, also, to have a dynamic and successful e-life so that you can be a true HomoDigital.

Thanks for all of your comments and responses to my question. Perhaps the relative success of using Wibbitz depends upon the platform (if that's the right term!) upon which the web page rests. Interesting idea though.

Tech vs Text: New Study Unveils What Students Are Actually Using To Learn | Edudemic

Tech vs Text: New Study Unveils What Students Are Actually Using To Learn | Edudemic | Technology for independant life long learning | Scoop.it

Here’s a brief overview of the study:

The study polled 1,200 full-time students at 4-year colleges and universities.
2 out of 3 students said the iPad was “in” on their campus.
About 12% own an iPad … but adoption rate is faster than laptop adoption rates.
Desktop computers are still en vogue despite the headlines. 19% of students still own a desktop. 10% say they own a tablet.
Laptops are still king by a long-shot: 88% of students own one.
E-textbooks are getting a bit more popular as 20% of students polled bought or rented an e-textbook this past semester.

10 Reasons Students Aren’t Actually Using eTextbooks | Edudemic | Technology for independant life long learning | Scoop.it

One might think that reading a textbook is basically the same in any format. But some researchers believe that the brain absorbs digital and printed text differently. In one study, students who read printed books seemed to more fully understand material, and did so much faster than another group of students who read the same material in a digital format. They explain that digital vs. print reading is much like the difference between “knowing” and “remembering.”

What is the theory that underpins moocs? the future of education

What is the theory that underpins moocs? the future of education | Technology for independant life long learning | Scoop.it

These are a few of the more prominent attributes of MOOCs that I’ve been involved with. As stated above, there is overlap between our model at that of Coursera/EDx. However, Coursera/EDx emulates the existing education system, choosing instead to transfer it online rather than transform it online. No doubt they will continue to evolve their model and we’ll continue to evolve ours.

5 Reflections for Teachers Heading Into Summer Break | TeachHUB

5 Reflections for Teachers Heading Into Summer Break | TeachHUB | Technology for independant life long learning | Scoop.it

Reflection #1: How can we ask students to be life-long learners if we aren't learning ourselves? Educators must become digitally literate.

Reflection #2: I never ask a student to complete an activity I wouldn't do myself. I don't do worksheets. Neither do they.

Reflection #3: I never did well on tests. I performed best on project-based learning & assessment. Guess which one we do in my class?

Reflection #4: We ask our students to collaborate, share, communicate, and create. Shouldn't teachers do the same in their work?

Reflection #5: Quote from student - "We learn more than technical skills in Mr. Goble's class. We learn life skills." Bingo!

McLuhan (1911-1980): medium is message - Gutenburg to Zuckerberg | Technology for independant life long learning | Scoop.it

In essence, McLuhan opened our minds to the role of technology and media by asking the right questions. He wanted to know how technology and media affect our minds, habits, society and culture. Late in his life he gave us, what in my opinion, is his most useful piece of work – the tetrad. His "tetrad" of four media laws tried to clarify the nature & impact of a technology or medium

Distance Education Should Be a Viable Solution to Create Quality Teaching

Distance Education Should Be a Viable Solution to Create Quality Teaching | Technology for independant life long learning | Scoop.it

This post is a debate article written by Mary Burns on July 12, 2012 in Distance Education for Teachers.

"Unfortunately, many models of distance education in poorer countries do little, in their current form, to help “develop” the kind of high quality teachers students need. This has less to do with technology. Rather it is the cumulative result of perceptions, understandings of change and an overly narrow focus on scale ..."

10 Ways That Mobile Learning Will Revolutionize Education

10 Ways That Mobile Learning Will Revolutionize Education | Technology for independant life long learning | Scoop.it
Smartphones and tablet computers are radically transforming how we access our shared knowledge sources by keeping us constantly connected to near-infinite volumes of raw data and information.

Up until now, most people relegated “education” to a finite time in their lives: entering school at around five years old and attending school institutions all the way to university. Education had an expiration date, then working life began. This model, which has its roots in the industrial era, is quickly becoming less relevant or applicable to the way we live our lives in the connected age.

Konstantinos Kalemis's comment, June 2, 2012 6:14 AM
The primary purpose of the Enrichment/Gifted and Talented Curriculum is to challenge eligible students to think differently and critically through a variety of instructional approaches. Such instructional approaches may include brainstorming, cooperative learning, oral demonstrations and presentations, creative analytical writing, and creative problem solving techniques.
The primary goal for the teacher/facilitator is to determine a particular area of study. Such study may include short term tasks as well as long term projects. Instruction then focuses on refining and expanding previously learned skills through practice and application.
Content consists of ideas, concepts, descriptive information, and facts. Content, as well as learning experiences, can be modified through acceleration, compacting, variety, reorganization, flexible pacing, and the use of more advanced or complex concepts, abstractions, and materials. If they master a particular unit, they need to be provided with more advanced learning activities, not more of the same activity. Their learning characteristics are best served by thematic, broad-based, and integrative content, rather than just single-subject areas. In addition, such concept-based instruction expands opportunities to generalize and to integrate and apply ideas. Middle and secondary schools are generally organized to meet student needs within content areas. Jacobs and Borland (1986) found that gifted students benefit greatly from curriculum experiences that cross or go beyond traditional content areas, particularly when they are encouraged to acquire an integrated understanding of knowledge and the structure of the disciplines.
