The Importance of Understanding the Relationship Between the Flipped Class Model and Pedagogy

The Importance of Understanding the Relationship Between the Flipped Class Model and Pedagogy | Technology for Education | Scoop.it

"Good flipped teaching and learning is far more involved and incorporates a full cycle of learning activities. It is ultimately the underlying pedagogy that should drive the use of the flip, and is where much its value is found...

So much of what flipped teaching is about isn’t new – it’s just bringing together a number of ideas and constructs, (some older and some newer – like the focus on leveraging digital content) in a way that makes sense for 21st century teaching and learning."

Focus on the cycle of learning ... not sure if the model should be sequential i.e. Prepare --> Perform --> Reflect. I would like to see more a spiral approach with lots of smaller 'chunked' activities and moving between Prepare (content delivery) --> Perform (apply, analyse, synthesise) --> Reflect (including assessment of).

Possibly not just for teachers, but if it works so well then maybe the authors might need to think again, 'brevity the soul of wit'

Phil Turner's curator insight, December 3, 2013 6:03 PM

This looks surprisingly effective (in my test of one article) ... and could be a useful first order tool for scanning large amounts of work.  Students might learn to summarise/paraphrase by looking carefully at how the results relate to the original text (if they can resist just cutting and pasting the new words).

Linda Denty's curator insight, July 28, 2013 7:07 PM

A lot still depends on the individual teacher's engagement with technology and to an extent the PD opportunities offered at the school. This could be in the form of peer tutoring amongst staff, or teacher initiated PD.
