Pasnik, director of the Center for Children and Technology, was one of a group of media creators, scholars, and educators who met in Pittsburgh in early June for the 2014 Fred Forward Conference. Experts discussed how to help children build consistent, positive, and meaningful connections with human beings and new media.

"This post is about a topic and app close to my heart. Computer programming is the engine of modern life and dream maker for tens of thousands. More and more countries are introducing the subject as compulsory schooling at surprisingly young ages. The UK is introducing a national school programme in september this year whilst also funding yearofcode.org to increase momentum. Code.org is pushing an international message with big-name endorsement. Even small countries like Estonia have their 5-year-olds taking their first steps into logical problem solving. A site I’ve used for years is codecademy.com"

These look like great ideas to encourage media literacy as well. You have to understand media from the inside to create media. Nothing makes you more media literate then learning to create it.

If my understanding of 'big data' is somewhat accurate, I am not sure what big data does for education. Education is relational. It is personally relational and people relate to learning. As a classroom teacher, I was aware what worked and what did not.

"But Catherine Steiner-Adair, a clinical psychologist at Harvard and author of The Big Disconnect: Protecting Childhood and Family Relationships in the Digital Age, is concerned that kids and their parents already spend too much time on devices.

"Nothing — no new app, no new game — can replace the old truth, I think, that children thrive, that families thrive, in the context of healthy real-life relationships," she says.

Still, Steiner-Adair says, a game that helps kids practice skills like listening and working through difficult emotions might be useful if it's played in moderation. "I am cautious, but I am guardedly optimistic that there could be some kind of computer game that could strengthen children's social and emotional intelligence," she says.

In the end, even Hawkins is the first to admit that kids won't actually play this game or learn anything unless the game is fun."

What happens when students embrace design thinking?

What happens when students embrace design thinking? | Technology for Children - Tecnología para niños | Scoop.it
The Global Day of Design just wrapped up on May 2nd. If you want to see what happens when 80,000+ students embrace design thinking, check out the Twitter stream and #GDD17 hashtag!

Students from six different continents (over 20 countries) participated and rocked this event in the second year in existence. Teachers and entire schools carved time out for students to not only beginning with empathy, not only brainstorm and navigate ideas, but to make, create, build, and design while in school.

This was only one day, and although the event was a success for our students, the real question is: What happens when students embrace design thinking beyond one day?

This article contains one of the most determining topics in education. Promoting desing thinking or critical thinking in students is one of the most challenging and significant aspects to do for teachers. Therefore, this article provides an example about how can we make that students come up with ideas which become trascendental in their likes and in their learning processes. Exposing students to such activities will make that our labor be more meaningful. Therefore, our task is to reflect how can we promote this kind of ideas in our classrooms.

10 Reasons Why We Need Research Literacy, Not Scare Columns

10 Reasons Why We Need Research Literacy, Not Scare Columns | Technology for Children - Tecnología para niños | Scoop.it

The children and media research community has been buzzing with frustration at the viral circulation of Cris Rowan's Huffington Post column, "10 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should Be Banned for Children Under the Age of 12." The piece pretty well defines "hack-ademic" writing, in which an author throws lots of learned-sounding terms and citations at a lay reader, while obscuring misinterpretations and fuzzy logic. Here are 10 reasons why Rowan's column is flawed.
