The evolution of the modern day classroom

The evolution of the modern day classroom | Technology | Scoop.it

There was a time in the not-too-distant past when young adults completed high school, moved swiftly into a job or trade apprenticeship, started a family, or – entered a four-year traditional university to work toward their college degree. Enter the modern age, where higher education has received a much needed facelift. The Evolution of the Modern Day Classroom Infographic explores the benefits of the modern day classroom and presents interestings facts and stats!

There are currently 2.6 million students pursuing an online degree. Of these millions of learners, 56% are employed full-time, and 16% are employed part-time. These nontraditional students take their education seriously, enjoy lower education-related debts than traditional students, and can continue to advance their careers – all thanks to the modern evolution of higher education. In addition to online learning options, some of the most advanced schools, like Brandman University, offer blended programs that combine face-to-face instruction with virtual learning to accommodate to the schedules of busy adult students.

Thousands of Free Media Files in the Public Domain Project - FRACTUS LEARNING | Technology | Scoop.it
It doesn’t take a lot of digging to find free media online, but more often than not, although these assets may be free to view and often download, copyright and licensing rules can put some pretty heavy restrictions on using them. This is where sites like the Public Domain Project can be of huge value, providing easy and searchable access to media files that are completely free of all known copyright restrictions. And that’s about as free as free gets on the modern web.

How Minecraft and Duct Tape Wallets Prepare Our Kids for Jobs That Don’t Exist Yet (EdSurge News)

How Minecraft and Duct Tape Wallets Prepare Our Kids for Jobs That Don’t Exist Yet (EdSurge News) | Technology | Scoop.it
Whether it’s Minecraft or duct tape wallets, the childhood passions that seem like fads, if not totally unproductive, can alternatively be seen as mediums for experiencing the virtuous cycle of curiosity: discovering, trying, failing and growing. At DIY, we’ve created a way for kids to explore hundreds of skills and to understand the ways in which they can be creative through them. Often, the skills are unconventional, and almost always the results are surprising. I don’t think it’s important that kids use the skills they learn on DIY for the rest of their lives. What’s important is that kids develop the muscle to be fearless learners so that they are never stuck with the skills they have. Only this will prepare them for a world where change is accelerating and depending on a single skill to provide a lifetime career is becoming impossible.

If there's one thing we should all know about the future of education, it is that technology will play a huge role.  Digital sources provide us with seemingly unending capacity to adapt our courses to meet the needs of modern learners.  College programs centered on blended instruction signifies a coming shift, not only in how students learn, but in how teachers teach.

Schools in Finland will no longer teach 'subjects' | EDUcation CHANGE | Teaching by Topic

Schools in Finland will no longer teach 'subjects' | EDUcation CHANGE | Teaching by Topic | Technology | Scoop.it

For years, Finland has been the by-word for a successful education system, perched at the top of international league tables for literacy and numeracy.

.

Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, explained: “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life.

.

“Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of  bank clerks totting up figures but now that has totally changed.

.

“We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.”

.

Subject-specific lessons – an hour of history in the morning, an hour of geography in the afternoon – are already being phased out for 16-year-olds in the city’s upper schools. They are being replaced by what the Finns call “phenomenon” teaching – or teaching by topic. For instance, a teenager studying a vocational course might take “cafeteria services” lessons, which would include elements of maths, languages (to help serve foreign customers), writing skills and communication skills.

.

More academic pupils would be taught cross-subject topics such as the European Union - which would merge elements of economics, history (of the countries involved), languages and geography.

.

I wonder if this would work in the U.S.? Also, in Finland, students do not take standardized tests until the end of high school (Zhao, 2012, p. 111), so thankfully, perhaps the drill and kill process is diminished.

Some valuable e-safety thoughts :)

Owen Kim's curator insight, March 7, 4:48 AM

Social media is something that almost everyone uses and can give significant impact to people. Some people cannot differentiate what is and what is not appropriate to upload or publish hence it is good that everyone knows what and when to upload. Some people now days leave negative comments because of inappropriate posts which may lead to conflicts between people or hurting one's emotion. I feel that people should be sensitive when uploading a post so that negative impacts of social media will not worsen.

Sze Min's curator insight, March 8, 6:20 AM

Almost everyone has social media accounts nowadays. But it stills narrow down to whether you are using it appropriately or not. Especially when the social medias are linked together, you would have to be careful on how you use it, as once the photos or status are online, everybody in the world would be able to see it.
