10 Unique Dictionaries You'll Love

10 Unique Dictionaries You'll Love | New Writing Technology Must Haves | Scoop.it

10 tantalizing dictionary sites for writers; everything from simple definitions to antonyms and new words and meanings.

Via Catherine Christaki
Linda Ross's insight:

These sites offer numerous sources for words, from simple words to words and meanings you have never heard of; all of which can help with constructing meaningful writing. More than just just dictionaries for writers these sites are a "must access" when writing.  They give you what you need to write unique, creative papers that will stand out from the rest.

BadLanguage.net gives you ten (10) useful, and occasionally playful, dictionary sites for writers, three (3) of which are listed here:

1. One Look - Will collate definitions from dictionaries across the web and has a reverse dictionary feature when you know what you want to say but can't remember the right word

2. Visuwords - For those who prefer to see the patterns of language. It

displays meanings, linked words and concepts as a spider diagram that you can manipulate and explore.

3. Urban Dictionary - scroll through this one; be horrified and be amused, it lets you see how people play with words and meanings.

Your #1 grammar and spell checker for social media, e-mails and documents! Ginger Proofreader works on your desktop or mobile.

Linda Ross's insight:

I love the latest in technology!  While composing emails and writing any type of article, it's natural to second guess ourselves in spelling, grammar or if a word is being used correctly in a sentence. Ginger could prove to be an excellent tool that may put an end to all of our spelling and grammar woes.

Why is Ginger so great?

Ginger Proofreader, according to the website, corrects spelling and grammar mistakes based on the context of complete sentences by comparing each sentence to billions of similar sentences from the web.

Grammar Girl

Grammar Girl | New Writing Technology Must Haves | Scoop.it
Get Grammar Girl's take on sentence length. Learn when a sentence is too long and how to write a short sentence.
Linda Ross's insight:

This website was suggested by a university professor and is very useful.  The following information from the Grammar Girl website will help you with quality writing. I have used it as a resource many times.  The website has a searchable feature to assist with answering all your questions about writing ANYTHING.

Grammar Girl

GG states that although Microsoft Word's Grammar Checker isn't known for its helpfulness, it does notice long sentences and sentence fragments. If Grammar Checker has filled your screen with squiggly lines, pay attention. It won’t fix your sentences, but it will help you identify them.

Sentence Length:

The best way to cut down a super-long sentence is to figure out your main points according to Grammar Girl. (You’ve probably crammed two or three main points into your long sentence.) Once you remember what they are, highlight each one with its own medium-sized sentence. Then deal with your leftover crumbs.
