The Scandinavian country is an education superpower because it values equality more than excellence.
Kathy E Gill's insight:

There are no private schools in Finland.

There are no private universities, either.

There are no standardized tests (except the National Matriculation Exam).
What there is in Finland: "all teachers and administrators are given prestige, decent pay, and a lot of responsibility."

All profiles must contribute to the greater good of socially-fueled search.
Kathy E Gill's insight:

Ars, 17 Jan 2013. "Now, Facebook has pushed everyone into the limelight. We’ve noted a couple of profiles, formerly non-searchable, now appear in search results. Social: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Connect | KurzweilAI

Social: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Connect | KurzweilAI | Technology And The Classroom | Scoop.it

n Social, renowned psychologist Matthew Lieberman explores groundbreaking research in social neuroscience revealing that our need to connect with other people is even more fundamental, more basic, than our need for food or shelter.  Because of this, our brain uses its spare time to learn about the social world – other people and our relation to them. It is believed that we must commit 10,000 hours to master a skill.  According to Lieberman, each of us has spent 10,000 hours learning to make sense of people and groups by the time we are ten.

Social argues that our need to reach out to and connect with others is a primary driver behind our behavior.

Kathy E Gill's insight:

I'm always interested in "why" - usually far more than "how." It will be interesting to see what's new in Lieberman's book. Via Howard Rheingold.

Antonia Rudenstine's curator insight, August 3, 2013 7:58 AM

A very new interesting book on how our brains are as wired to connect as they are wired to seek food and shelter...further proof that the social constructivists were onto something, and further evidence that the blended learning world is going to have to ensure that connection is a deep part of what students get to do when they are learning online: for most students, solitary computer work is not going to feel transformational.

Martha Love's curator insight, October 10, 2013 4:26 AM

I find this book to be extremely important in our understanding of the true nature of our human species.
