NSW and Victoria have added smart watches to the list of items banned from exam rooms in order to prevent students from accessing notes, the internet or communicating with others, The Age reports. This follows similar moves from universities su [...]
District professional development spending does not equate to teacher improvement, study finds.
Anna Hu 's insight:
There were modest, but statistically significant, improvements for teachers that were more open to feedback and those that reported receiving frequent observations while teaching. Realism among teachers was also found to help: those teachers that were able to accurately self-assess their performance in manner consistent with their actual performance review were more likely than not to have seen improvements. Likewise, “non-improvers are almost twice as likely to self-assess their own performance as stronger than their formal ratings.”
But the decision to get rid of my teacher’s desk was officially made on the final PA day of the school year when we came into school to clean up our classrooms. As I looked at this old, broken down symbol of authority, I asked myself a question, “What if I didn’t have a teacher’s desk next year?”
Whether it’s Minecraft or duct tape wallets, the childhood passions that seem like fads, if not totally unproductive, can alternatively be seen as mediums for experiencing the virtuous cycle of curiosity: discovering, trying, failing and growing. At DIY, we’ve created a way for kids to explore hundreds of skills and to understand the ways in which they can be creative through them. Often, the skills are unconventional, and almost always the results are surprising. I don’t think it’s important that kids use the skills they learn on DIY for the rest of their lives. What’s important is that kids develop the muscle to be fearless learners so that they are never stuck with the skills they have. Only this will prepare them for a world where change is accelerating and depending on a single skill to provide a lifetime career is becoming impossible.
No matter how engaging things are or transformative your approach, learning still matters. In fact, it is the habits students form while internalizing content that can create the most enduring change. What will they learn, and how?
"Students say using technology better engages them in learning. Parents say technology skills are important for preparing their children to be successful in life. Educators see the positive impact of technology in their classrooms."

Anna Hu 's insight:
Interesting opinion, however not sure I want someone directly in my brain so we can get rid of email!
Technology is an immense tool that can transform the way students learn. One of my favourite quotes which demonstrates this comes from Steve Jobs: “What a computer is to me is it’s the most remarkable tool that we’ve ever come up with, and it’s the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds.“
Parenting these days is patrolled by the language police. Sometimes it seems like the worst thing you could ever say to a kid is “Good job!” or the dreaded, “Good girl!” Widely popularized psychological research warns about the “inverse power of praise” and the importance of “unconditional parenting.” What are these researchers really getting at? Are the particular words we use to talk to our kids so important? And how do we convey positive feelings without negative consequences?
