Why we don't have the world's best, or most respected, teachers

Why we don't have the world's best, or most respected, teachers | Technology and Leadership in Education | Scoop.it
Barely a day goes by when people aren’t bemoaning the state of teacher education in Australia. Australian students' results are declining, entry requirements for teachers aren’t high enough, teaching courses…
Anna Hu 's insight:

Lets plan for the future and start to require better qualified and academically capable teachers-

An Australian teacher’s salary at the top of the scale is 1.30 times the GDP per capita, making it among the lowest in OECD countries, where the average is 1.65. Teachers in South Korea are paid at the 78th percentile in their country’s wage distribution, and rise to well over two-and-a-half times the starting salary. Those in Australia are paid around the 50th percentile and rise to less than one-and-a-half times starting salaries.

The e-textbook transformation

The e-textbook transformation | Technology and Leadership in Education | Scoop.it
A new wave of e-textbooks is giving students more than just words and a few hotlinks on a digital page. Publishers over the last few years have been adding video, interactive maps and gamified quizzes
Anna Hu 's insight:

In the southwest Florida district—which has 48 schools and more than 44,000 students—fifth- and eighth-grade students whose teachers used the techbook improved their state rankings on the 2012 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, or FCAT, and passed the exam at moderately higher rates.

In eighth grade, students using the techbook scored nearly 17 points higher than students who didn’t. Fifth graders with techbooks scored more than 4 points higher and fifth-grade English language learners scored 14 points higher.

Kohler says it is the features of the techbook that engage students and are driving this achievement. Among these features are videos and animations that demonstrate concepts like photosynthesis; simulations where students can, for example, test how light creates color when it reflects off objects; and interactive glossaries that define scientific terms.

The Future of E-Ducation: The Impact of Technology and Analytics on the Education Industry

This groundbreaking EdTech study examines the way that modern technology is bringing remarkable innovation into the educational sector; a field which has historically remained fairly fixed and traditional for centuries. The report analyses the degree to which education is being made into a universally accessible, innovative, personalized, and adaptive experience, and finds that the these changes will be pivotal for achieving the United Nations’ goal of universal education by 2015.

To Improve Student Performance, Start Thinking Like a Coach

To Improve Student Performance, Start Thinking Like a Coach | Technology and Leadership in Education | Scoop.it

feedback is fundamentally different from grading, and conceptually separating the two is a key to great teaching. Grades are backward facing—they are an evaluation of past performance. Feedback is forward facing—it is information aimed at improving performance in the future. - See more at: http://www.facultyfocus.com/articles/educational-assessment/improve-student-performance-start-thinking-like-coach/#sthash.qJITEBQ0.dpufI have a confession to make. I was wrong. You see, I once thought that teaching was lecturing, and I thought that because that is how my graduate mentors taught me to teach.

But I was wrong. Studies have shown that lecturing has little to do with teaching. A University of Maryland study found that right after a physics lecture, almost none of the students could answer the question: “What was the lecture you just heard about?” Another physics professor simply asked students about the material that he had presented only 15 minutes earlier, and he found that only ten percent showed any sign of remembering it (Freedman, 2012).

Is All This Student Data Changing the Way Teachers Teach?

Is All This Student Data Changing the Way Teachers Teach? | Technology and Leadership in Education | Scoop.it
With so much access to student data these days, teachers are experimenting with different tactics, and figuring out what's working and what's not. As with most scenarios using education technology, it's a mixed bag. How it's used depends on a variety of factors in each school and in each teacher’s classroom. Some teachers are embracing student data to inform their teaching, while others believe there's a risk of an over-reliance on hard numbers that doesn’t take into account the human factor.
