This is much inline with my readings on the zero marginal cost society. Being able to print your own car may not be practical of cost effective today but once it is and car 3D models are available free or low charge on the web, where will the car industry go? I understand why Tesla is building huge battery manufacturing plant as they may have seen that providing key components may be the future of the car industry?

This is a good utility of 3D printer.

Russell R. Roberts, Jr.'s curator insight, September 30, 2014 6:55 AM

Fascinating idea that could revolutionize how we buy, repair, and maintain our cars/trucks.  Imagine dialing up a Porsche sportscar and having it in your garage in a few hours?  Farfetched...but possible. I bet the major car makers are a bit concerned about this.  Aloha, Russ.

Christopher Whelan's curator insight, October 24, 2013 8:05 PM

The excitement behind 3D printing is easily justifiable; it is astounding to think that with the press of a button, a plastic figurine can be materialized right in front of us. Do I believe that putting such a device in an everyday household with be earth shattering? No. Nonetheless, the concept is fascinating, and I believe it to have much potential.
