Reading is different online than off, experts say

Reading is different online than off, experts say | Technology and Education Resources | Scoop.it

“We can’t turn back,” Wolf said. “We should be simultaneously reading to children from books, giving them print, helping them learn this slower mode, and at the same time steadily increasing their immersion into the technological, digital age. It’s both. We have to ask the question: What do we want to preserve?”

Vaikuttaa lupaavalta vuorovaikutteiselta työkalulta yhteistoiminnalliseen oppimiseen.

Thoreauback's curator insight, April 9, 1:14 PM

WOW! I use freewrites in my face-to-face class because I don't believe a person can write without thinking. Yet, the document students are writing about is always distinct from the free write. In LMS discussion boards the situation is the same.

Do you remember how annotations use to appear in the margins of really good books? This is the same. The two-pane interface puts the document right in front of the student and lets them attach their comments to specific paragraphs, pictures or videos.  How perfect is that?

I want to try this for a quarter.

Mary Clark's curator insight, April 11, 2:02 PM

While much of this can be done in Google docs, there are several features which can extend the conversation.  Teachers do need to share documents via email.

R.Conrath, Ed.D.'s insight:

A new Texas-based service could help K-12 educators choose the best instructional materials for their schools.

Called Learning List, the subscription-based service describes itself as a combination “Consumer Reports” and “Angie’s List” for K-12 curriculum products and online courses. Its professional curriculum and software reviews can save schools money by supplementing or replacing the local review process, said Founder and President Jackie Lain.

What Do They Know? Dismissing a Viral Presumption About Millennials | Technology and Education Resources | Scoop.it

By assuming that each student who walks through the doors of an elementary, middle or high school is a fully knowledgeable online citizen, we are perpetuating societal inequalities that exist among the more and less privileged when it comes to their Internet skills and by extension, the potential benefits they may or may not reap from spending time online.
