The days of the expert are behind us despite the advent of TED talks and other media where we still seem to think the sage on the stage is the way to impart knowledge, wisdom, and truth. There are moments for that, but learning is very relational, contingent, contextual, and personal.

Is your school heading towards a Web 3.0 environment, where teachers will not only be those whom are licensed professionals but also those who are accesible on line from all parts of the worlld? Will schools graduate students whom view industrywill view as co-workers whom are prepared for a knowledge economy? This table presents what may be in the future. What do you think?

Quite of few of the examples are famliar, but the point being that depending on the culture, the values, the worldview, etc. what it means to be educated, and how one goes about learning, can be vastly different.

Robin Good: Must-read article on by Leslie M-B, exploring in depth the opportunity to have students master their selected topics by "curating" them, rather than by reading and memorizing facts about them.


"Critical and creative thinking should be prioritized over remembering content"


"That students should learn to think for themselves may seem like a no-brainer to many readers, but if you look at the textbook packages put out by publishers, you’ll find that the texts and accompanying materials (for both teachers and students) assume students are expected to read and retain content—and then be tested on it.


Instead, between middle school (if not earlier) and college graduation, students should practice—if not master—how to question, critique, research, and construct an argument like an historian."


This is indeed the critical point. Moving education from an effort to memorize things on which then to be tested, to a collaborative exercise in creating new knowledge and value by pulling and editing together individual pieces of content, resources and tools that allow the explanation/illustration of a topic from a specific viewpoint/for a specific need.


And I can't avoid to rejoice and second her next proposition: "What if we shifted the standards’ primary emphasis from content, and not to just the development of traditional skills—basic knowledge recall, document interpretation, research, and essay-writing—but to the cultivation of skills that challenge students to make unconventional connections, skills that are essential for thriving in the 21st century?"

I had a similar conversation yesterday and as I prepare my lit review this thinking has emerged. It is less about content and more about skills, attitudes, habits, practices, etc. in learning.

This article is a reminder that as we are curating content as teachers so are students. Rather then memorizing or reciting textbook facts, students should be able to steer and set their own learning goals (this is where PBL) comes into mind.

If learners take responsibility for their learning, they will be more motivated to learn. If teachers are accountable for their learning, then there is no reason to be motivated other than for a grade.

Responsibility means a moral obligation and something taken upon one's self.

Accountability is more of a social contract or social obligation. Accountability can be measurable. If teachers are accountable for their learners' learning, then why would learners feel responsible for their own learning?

When learners feel a sense of ownership, they want to engage in academic tasks and persist in learning. If teachers and learners are learners first, then responsibility comes with being a learner. Learners of all ages become responsible for their learning when they own and drive their learning.

So what is it? Teachers and learners need to be accountable for their own learning by taking responsibility for their learning. What do you see as the difference between accountability and responsibility?

My Voice provides educators with a powerful tool for understanding both what motivates and inspires students to achieve, and how well students believe their school is meeting those objectives. My Voice is a powerful tool for initiating innovative, meaningful school reform.  


Global summary:  


Student-teacher relationships, which can be powerful contributors to student engagement
and academic success, are in need of improvement; moreover, perceptions of studentteacher relationships appear to weaken, rather than strengthen, through the middle school
and into the high school years.
– At all levels of secondary education, students need to be more engaged—and trends across
the grade levels suggest this problem gets worse, not better, the longer students are in
school; and
– While learning in school in general is perceived as important, it is not perceived as
particularly relevant to many students’ lives, and this perceived relevance generally declines
as students progress through school.


This document needs to be read and read well for those looking to change the culture of their building.

"School libraries today feel increasing pressure to reinvent themselves in the face of increasing financial pressures, new media technologies, and a progressively media-savvy population. Their transformation from information reserve to knowledge center has been fast underway. This paper builds on that evolution to develop an argument for media literacy education as the pedagogical foundation for the learning commons model for school libraries. This would position the school library as a dynamic media literacy learning hub, anchoring entire schools around knowledge, expression, collaboration, and creation in both virtual and physical spaces. The paper will highlight the case of Chelmsford High School Learning Commons in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, as a vibrant central space in a school for just this type of integrated learning."
