The 7 characteristics of a digitally competent teacher

The 7 characteristics of a digitally competent teacher | Technology and Education Resources | Scoop.it
Being a proper digitally competent teacher is not as simple as picking up an iPhone and tweeting. You need to be a good digital citizen, understand privacy, and more. In an effort to clarify and explain some of the most important characteristics that a digitally competent teacher must have, we whipped up this fun visual. [...]

This is an ongoing discussion between my English Teacher friend and I.  I think the real question is why are we still teaching keyboarding??

Allan Shaw's curator insight, June 12, 10:21 PM

It is becoming clearer that it is important that we do not lose  handwriting as a skill! Strong positive neural development in a child is far more important than adeptness in using digital technologies. If research continues to support these initial studies many educators will need to reflect and possibly readjust.

Sharla Shults's curator insight, June 16, 11:57 AM

New evidence suggests that the links between handwriting and broader educational development run deep. Children not only learn to read more quickly when they first learn to write by hand, but they also remain better able to generate ideas and retain information. In other words, it’s not just what we write that matters — but how.

The 8 Key Elements Of Digital Literacy

The 8 Key Elements Of Digital Literacy | Technology and Education Resources | Scoop.it
Many teachers have added ‘digital literacy’ as number four on the list of literacies their students should have (or be working towards, in most cases). Reading, writing, and math are now followed by digital literacy. Obviously, depending on the grade level  you teach, your students will have different abilities in each of the four areas, …

BUT, as WE are using "Technology", let us ALSO learn about the basics of "Cyber Security", a MUST in a connected technology driven world:

WGU's mentor-supported, competency-based, online learning model is a model of Stage 3 learning.

Nichelle Plivelic's comment, March 6, 4:57 AM
There are three main stages to personalized learning, which involves the teacher figuring out how each student learns individually and establishing goals for the students. A teacher can change the physical layout if this helps(when working with children who are easily distracted, such as those with ADHD or autism, it's best to get rid of as many distractions as possible). The student will learn at their own pace in whatever way is the most effective.

The Maker Movement and the Rebirth of Constructionism - Hybrid Pedagogy

The Maker Movement and the Rebirth of Constructionism - Hybrid Pedagogy | Technology and Education Resources | Scoop.it
The culmination of my quest for more powerful learning grounded in theory and research came when recently I conducted an experiment in pushing constructionism into the digital age.

Constructionism is based on two types of construction. First, it asserts that learning is an active process, in which people actively construct knowledge from their experience in the world. People don’t get ideas; they make them. This aspect of construction comes from the constructivist theory of knowledge development by Jean Piaget. To Piaget’s concept, Papert added another type of construction, arguing that people construct new knowledge with particular effectiveness when they are engaged in constructing personally meaningful products.

Imagine my surprise and joy when I realized that I had arrived at constructionism prior to knowing that such a theory even existed. I believe that thousands of other educators are unknowingly working within the constructionist paradigm as well. Although many within the Maker movement are aware that it has it’s roots in constructionism, the movement is gaining impressive momentum without the majority of Makers realizing that there is a strong theoretical foundation behind their work.

After I came to understand this connection between my practices and the supporting theoretical framework I was better able to focus and refine my practice. Even more importantly, I felt more confident and powerful in forging ahead with further experiments in the learning situations I design for my learners.

Renee Stewart's curator insight, January 25, 8:03 PM

I think that these are the right answers for the goal of all education, with or without technological integration. We don't teach kids to use a hammer so they can bash things, it is so that they can integrate it as a tool to be used purposefully to achieve a greater goal e.g. the building of a house. In the process they develop hand-eye coordination, muscle control, restraint and safety-awareness. Digital tools - Analog tools, all valuable, all have their place within the context of broader learning. Our goal is to help students learn to match and the best tools for the task and then support them as they acquire both the tool specific skills and the broader educational goal.

Lou Salza's curator insight, November 28, 2013 8:14 AM

This is particularly important for students with language learning differences--Lou

Excerpt:

"...“There’s something about writing that is a link to your brain,” said Marissa Moss, author of the popular children’s book series Amelia’s Notebook. In the books, Moss takes on the persona of a little girl expressing her ideas about the world and people around her. The books are a combination of words and drawings and look free form – as though Amelia sketched them herself.

Taking a cue from Moss, teachers from Oak Knoll Elementary School in Menlo Park, Calif., decided to have their students keep notebooks in a similar style. The notebooks aren’t graded; rather, they’re a place of private, free expression. Karen Clancy and Andrea Boatright presented the project at the Innovative Learning Conference hosted by the Nueva School recently.

“They’re not used to being given permission to write about whatever they want,” Clancy said. But once her students realized that they really weren’t being graded and that they had freedom of expression, they eventually came to demand time to write.

Moss says writing without fear of consequences is key to developing a writer’s voice. “If you’re perfect you are guaranteed to not write a thing,” Moss said. “It’s like driving with one foot on the gas and one foot on the break.” She has developed some guides to help teachers coax students into using art and writing in their journals at the same time, as a way of flexing their visual thinking along with literacy...."

This year’s “The Learning Curve” report from Pearson takes a look at education across the globe. One of the main things the report does is rank the world’s educational systems (which we’ll talk about in a different post). What I find even more interesting is the focus on what skills current students need to meet the ever changing needs of the global market, and some potential ways to address shortcomings in our collective educational systems.

This article effected me in the way of how I learn best. I am an audible learner but i also like to have a hard book to flip the pages of and look back on, instead of having to switch screens . Part of me has an aversion to reading long articles/stories/content online because in a textbook, i can use post-it notes, fold over pages, and flip back and forth easily. It is great that they are trying to make everything uniform with teachers and students, but not everyone learns the same or enjoys staring at a screen for countless hours in order to finish their homework. The internet is also a huge distraction.

Blended learning has much potential.  However, it is only PART of the solution to why ails education today.  It is not a replacement for funding.  Adequate funding, whether online of f2f, must go hand in hand.  You can't maximize the potential of education while cutting necessary $$$.
