10 Timeless Leadership Lessons to Help Expand Your Influence

#leadership #management #business

donhornsby's curator insight, May 22, 9:14 AM

Leaders must take more time to stop, reflect and assess their own thinking, capabilities and aptitudes.

(From the article): As leaders, you must begin to look beyond the obvious and open your eyes to see the opportunities previous unseen.   Leadership requires you to have circular vision and when you begin to grow complacent, you only see the obvious details before you – rather than those they lie around, beneath and beyond what you seek.  In fact, your mindset becomes stagnate because you are not stretching your perspectives enough to see more than you want to.

When you fall into this trap, it’s time to reshuffle the deck, and map out the internal and external factors that are influencing your thinking. You must begin to identify areas that can be improved –  such as relationships, workshop culture, networking, how you are investing in yourself (or lack thereof), etc.

It’s not experience, but rather opportunity that is the true mother of success.   Be more mindful about how you manage opportunity before it begins to manage you.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, May 22, 10:41 AM

The first lesson is a good place to begin. We become so busy we do not look up and from side-to-side. Leaders need to be present and aware of what is happening and not happening. They need to be aware of who is best served to take the reins in a given situation.

In School, leadership and management should be intertwined. Quite often, I found that the latter was used almost exclusively and leadership did not exist.

I'm often being asked "how do I learn to think more strategically?'. Some great tips in this article.

donhornsby's curator insight, April 30, 6:32 PM
(This one is a gem) 7.  Set aside time for forward thinking

My never-ending daily task list can distract me from putting focus on forward thinking. I know I need to dedicate at least one day each month to planning ahead. By simply scheduling this personal appointment for yourself, you’ll be impressed with how many new ideas you can create. Try setting up time during this specified day to meet with your team or others outside of your team to brainstorm even greater ideas for both the short and long-term.

4twenty2's curator insight, May 1, 10:26 AM

Out of all these Tips I think the last one is the most important.

Set aside Time for Forward Thinking

This is often the biggest challenge people have, finding time to break out of the routine, be innovative, creative and forward thinking.

Mobile future will Force Business into the Cloud

Mobile future will Force Business into the Cloud | Technology and Business | Scoop.it
Data collected through mobile applications is putting pressure on companies to upgrade their legacy infrastructures to the cloud in order to support and service the information that is coming through.

Kicking off EMC World 2014 in Las Vegas, EMC president of products and marketing Jeremy Burton drew on how he used a mobile application to make a car insurance claim almost on-the-spot through his smartphone following a car accident as an example of how far technology has evolved.

Burton indicated applications such as the one he used, which enabled him to capture the accident in detail via a sketch, a voice recording, and providing a written recount, will redefine infrastructures of businesses. He said in order for companies to support the influx of the different kinds of information and the magnitude of them, a business would need to scale up to support it.

How to measure innovation

We need a set of innovation metrics that measure how capable companies are, so we can separate reputation from capability and help companies focus on areas for improvement.

Ken Cooper's curator insight, April 21, 11:48 AM

Shaughnessy notes that reputation is often the chief measurement of innovative companies. Outputs, like the number of new products or patents, are also easy to measure. He looks to inputs as a key indicator of innovation capability. That is, where the raw material for innovation efforts comes from, and how it is processed into the final product.

I like Shaughnessy's emphasis on inputs, because the practice of innovation depends on inputs as the primary sources of innovation opportunity.

Johan Burger's curator insight, September 7, 12:50 AM

Measuring is crucial. If you do not measure, you cannot manage.

Emotional intelligence is the single biggest predictor of performance in the workplace and the strongest driver of leadership and personal excellence.

Richard Platt's curator insight, March 2, 11:48 AM

Personal competence is made up of your self-awareness and self-management skills, which focus more on you individually than on your interactions with other people. Personal competence is your ability to stay aware of your emotions and manage your behavior and tendencies.

Self-Awareness is your ability to accurately perceive your emotions and stay aware of them as they happen.
Self-Management is your ability to use awareness of your emotions to stay flexible and positively direct your behavior.
Social competence is made up of your social awareness and relationship management skills; social competence is your ability to understand other people’s moods, behavior, and motives in order to improve the quality of your relationships.

Social Awareness is your ability to accurately pick up on emotions in other people and understand what is really going on.
Relationship Management is your ability to use awareness of your emotions and the others’ emotions to manage interactions successfully.
