Almost four in 10 young people fear they are addicted to the internet, according to new research, prompting fears from children’s campaigners that youngsters could leave themselves vulnerable to cyber bullying.
Dan Kovach's insight:
This has been one of my biggest concerns regarding the impact of the digital information age on kids and education.
Days after a four-year-old girl was identified as Britain's youngest iPad "addict," parents of even younger children stepped forward to speak about their kids' compulsive tablet use — and why they permit it.
Does this look like you or someone you know. I spend the vast majority of my work week surrounded by kids, many resemble the girl in this video. I have counseled and spoke with parents who reported their kids "freaking out" when their devices are taken away as a punishment, motivator, or distraction. Some reported being afraid of the reaction they witnessed of their child. I agree with the experts on this, it's about balance and recognizing when things are out of balance.
Children addicted to electronic devices like smartphones, laptops and computer games may soon be labelled as having a mental illness.
Dan Kovach's insight:
Do you use technology to the detriment of other things in your life? It’s alarming to ask a student, “What did you do this past weekend?” and their only response is, “Game.” How often do you hear friend talk about the hours and hours they spent on Facebook? It is important to be conscious of how we much time we spend with technology.
