These days, the word “maker” can be interchanged for “constructivist” and the Maker Movement is really starting to sweep the country.

Trisha Collins's insight:

Too often the word on the street is “my school or class has new iPads but we don’t know what to do with them.” The best part about these devices is that they get the learning into the actual hands of students- make learning “hands-on.” That is NOT a new concept. Dewey, Montessori, David Kolb knew this long before the digital age- constructivism is one of the most effective ways to learn anything.

SNAP! (Build Your Own Blocks) | Digital Revolution - Design and technology teaching resources for a sustainable future in the classroom | Scoop.it

Via Susie Toso
Trisha Collins's insight:

SNAP is a visual, drag-and-drop programming language. It is an extended reimplementation of Scratch(a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab) that allows you to Build Your Own Blocks. It also features first class lists, first class procedures, and continuations. These added capabilities make it suitable for a serious introduction to computer science for high school or college students.

SNAP! runs in your browser. It is implemented using Javascript, which is designed to limit the ability of browser-based software to affect your computer, so it's safe to run even other people's projects, even if you don't trust our competence or good intentions.

Show parents/kids that tech will be a big part of our learning

- Allow kids to be part of the tech process.

- Show the kids that it is their learning and tech gives them a voice

- Begin to build the home/school connection by giving parents a “window” into a day in the classroom

Trisha Collins's insight:

The Scratch programming environment is a computer programming language designed for 8-12 year old children to learn how to program and create multimedia applications and games with ease. Scratch is a programming environment, based upon LOGO, which allows young programmers to easily create multimedia applications and simple games (Monroy-Hernández and Resnick 2008). Block programming eliminates the frustrations of syntax errors which afflict novices learning traditional computer programming languages. The Scratch environment allows the creation and control of graphical objects, known as sprites, which move around the screen and integration of graphics or photos and sound files to create multimedia applications.

More and more countries are introducing the subject as compulsory schooling at surprisingly young ages. The UK is introducing a national school programme in september this year whilst also funding yearofcode.org to increase momentum. Code.org is pushing an international message with big-name endorsement. Even small countries like Estonia have their 5-year-olds taking their first steps into logical problem solving. Once you have made the transition and seen the benefits, it is easy to weigh them against the potential risks and worries about the problems resulting from having a room full of devices. Book Creator for iPad Now Supports Handwriting - iPad Apps for Schools

Book Creator for iPad Now Supports Handwriting - iPad Apps for Schools | Digital Revolution - Design and technology teaching resources for a sustainable future in the classroom | Scoop.it

"The very popular iPad app Book Creator recently received a couple of updates of note. The first update was a new look for iOS 7 users. iOS 6 users will be happy to see that even though the app has been updated, it will still work the same way on their devices. The more important update to Book Creator is the addition of support for handwriting and free-hand drawing in your books."

Via John Evans, Susie Toso
Trisha Collins's insight:

Book Creator allows anyone to create their own books using images, text, videos, free-hand drawings, handwriting, and audio recordings. You can arrange your book in three different formats; portrait, square, or landscape. Each page in your book can include pictures and videos from your iPad’s camera roll and or from your iTunes library. In addition to the pictures and videos you can include as much as text as you can fit on each page. In fact, if you just want to have text on a page you can do that. If you would like to narrate your book you can tap the record button to add your voice to each page of your book. Every page in your book can have a custom color scheme. the only downside to this app is that it costs money!
