Google Tone

Google Tone | technologies | Scoop.it
Broadcast any URL to computers within earshot.
John Dalziel's insight:

Early Days as yet but, Google has launched a new experimental Chrome extension that lets users (e.g.practitioners) transmit the URL of a website to other nearby computers (Used within the learning environment) using nothing but sound.
To try the feature...
   - all computers must first have the Google Tone Chrome extension installed and
   - all computers must be within reasonable earshot of each other.
Then when the practitioner is on a webpage they’d like to share...
   - they hit the little Google Tone tab in their browser and they’ll hear a little succession of beeps — not too dissimilar to an old ZX Spectrum computer loading a game.
   - nearby machines receive a notification with the sender’s Google profile and picture embedded within the message, and
   - the learners can open the URL on their own PC.

The Internet for Left-Handers©

The Internet for Left-Handers© | technologies | Scoop.it

Since the majority of people are right-handed, including me, whenever you hover over a link you see a right-handed cursor.

It may not seem important to us right-handers but, even if you are a left-handed person, you are still forced to see the right-hand cursor.

Thanks to a useful Chrome plugin called “Internet for Left Handers” left-handed users can turn the right-hand cursor into a left-hand cursor while viewing the webpages.

So if you are a left-hander, simply install the plugin into your Chrome browser.

Once installed the plugin icon will appear to the right of the address bar in your browser. Simply click on it to enable or disable the left-hand cursor on webpages.

Tip: If the plugin doesn’t work after the installation, restart Chrome.

Harmony

An application that allows users to sketch and create art work in their web browser.

This is done either by going to a website, or by installing an app in Google Chrome. (Important Note: Harmony does not seem to work in Internet Explorer, but it does run in Chrome, Firefox and Safari.)

Harmony isn't fancy, and lacks documentation or tutorial support.

However, it is an extremely versatile tool for creating art work with a mouse on a computer screen. I spent far too long using it and experimenting with allthe settings.

Work can be saved in .png format with a unique URL. Or, you can easily capture the resulting artwork as a screenshot.

Chrome Remote Desktop app

The Chrome Remote Desktop app has the potential to aid assessers and on-line practitioners engage with their learners when they need support when trying to accomplish tasks on their computers; I've no doubt there are many other uses.

Using the Chrome Remote Desktop App (still in beta) Learners can grant access to their computer to practitioners, who also has the Chrome Remote Desktop App installed.

If individuals want to share their desktop,they just click "share now" and Chrome Remote Desktop will generate an access code to give to the person who will access their computer.

Obviously all parties will need Google Chrome and the app.

Appointlet

Appointlet | technologies | Scoop.it

Appointlet is an Appointment Scheduling Tool Built For Google Calendar.

Many Learning Provider Stakeholders have to deal with making appointments and then logging them into a calendar so they can actually remember to keep them.

There are easier ways.

Appointlet is one that those stakeholders may want to take a closer look at.

Appointlet lets those wishing to make appointments to use the web hosted applet to see the calendar and schedule an appointment with individuals (Selected from a list).

They can look at availablility, and with a couple of clicks add their name to the selected schedule.

The biggest plus is the integration with Google Calendar.

inklewriter

I have not got my head completely around Inkle Writer as yet but, beyond any doubt, it is one of those tools that has lots of potential uses within teaching & learning.

Inkle Writer...

- provides a platform on which practitioners and/or learners can write "choose your adventure" style stories;

- has a visual interface for constructing stories;

- allows users to write each paragraph (or less) as an independent piece;

- allows users to connect paragraphs to other pieces of the story; allowing the story to branch in many directions;

- allows users to piece the branches etc.,  from the resulting menu of paragraphs.

While trying Inkle Writer it struck me that it could be used in many ways including...

- a platform for learners to use to construct narrative stories that contain many characters and plot lines;

- a platform for practitioners to use to present various situations where their learners have decisions to make, e.g. Health & Safety; and the outcomes from those decisions.

Sleep Preventer 1.3 - Windows

Sleep Preventer 1.3 - Windows | technologies | Scoop.it

You will know how annoying it is when, in the middle of a presentation or showing a video clip, the computer goes to sleep or hibernates because it has been inactive for a while.

SleepPreventer is a simple piece of software that can help prevent a PC from going to sleep or hibernating, no matter how long you leave it inactive for.

It also prevents a PC from dimming the display and/or starting the screensaver.

Once installed, click on the “Prevent Sleep” icon, it overrides whatever default settings your PC may have.

Choose it to prevent sleep for a specific period of time like 5 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours or for infinity.

SleepPreventer is dead simple to use and can be really useful for watching movies, doing presentations or other stuff where your PC remains idle for a long time.

Sketch Toy

Sketch Toy | technologies | Scoop.it
Draw sketches with animating lines and share replays with friends!
John Dalziel's insight:

As practitioners I'm sure you will have tried out a number of online drawing tools and explored what they have to offer. If you haven't tried it check out Sketch Toy.
Sketch Toy is a free to use website offering a simple drawing interface but with a unique twist – the lines drawn can be made to appear as various degrees of shaky animations.
The canvas you are given has a texture that highlights this animated effect of shaky lines. The images created can be shared through a direct link. When people visit the link, they see the entire drawing made from start to finish, just like the user created it. Users can also download the image as a PNG file and share it but, of course, the animation effect would is lost.
P.S. the app offers a Chrome app as well.

P.P.S. With screen capture,it can be used to demonstrate maths or Science equations etc.
