Youngzine | News and more for the Young

Youngzine | News and more for the Young | technologies | Scoop.it

Youngzine is an online News Magazine for younger learners. It provides an educational, entertaining, yet safe way for kids (and adults) to get the latest news from around the world.

John Dalziel's insight:

Youngzine is a website site that features...
   - news,
   - sports, and
   - entertainment stories for younger learners (and adults).
The classroom blogs feature is worth a closer look.
Youngzine classroom blogs enable practitioners to create a private online space for their learners to use to discuss news stories.
Practitioners can register their learners on Youngzine and assign them to their 'classroom'. Then within their 'Youngzine classroom' they can assign articles for their students to read, ask them to response to articles and discussion prompts, and view their scores on the Youngzine weekly quiz.
In addition to the classroom blog option, Youngzine also offers learners the option to contribute their own reporting to the site through the U-Write section of the site. Learners can sign-up individually to contribute to Youngzine's U-Write section or a practitioner can register their entire class.

Smarty Pins: Trivia & Google Maps

Smarty Pins: Trivia & Google Maps | technologies | Scoop.it
Smarty Pins is a Google Maps based geography and trivia game.
John Dalziel's insight:

Google has released this new game called Smarty Pins which uses Google Maps for its layout.
It's a game that tests players geography and trivia skills. It could be ideal for use with learners.
Players in Smarty Pins are asked a wide variety of geography-based questions to which they have to provide answers by dragging and dropping a pin in Maps.
Scores are converted into miles and players are given 1000 miles at the start of the play .
With each incorrect answer a number of miles are subtracted from the players' score.
The trick is to answer questions as quickly as possible before the number of miles reaches zero.
First select a category. The categories available are...
   - Arts and Culture,
   - Science and Geography,
   - Sports and Games,
   - Entertainment,
   - History and Current Event.
Players will then be provided with a question.
If they find the question too hard to answer they can get help by using the "take a hint" button.
To answer the question players need to drop the pin on the correct location.
The final score you reach can be shared with others using social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

DjRun

DjRun | technologies | Scoop.it

When walking or exercising, a bit of music playing in the background can contribute to getting people into an exercising mindset.

An additional contribution would be if the music changed its tempo according to how fast users walk or run.

Here to help do that is an android phone app called DjRun.

DjRun is a free to use smartphone application for Android devices.

The app is...
- sized at nearly 1.5 MB and
- compatible with devices running Android version 2.1 or later.

The app can be used to play music while users exercise, using the built-in accelerometer in their phone to check the phone’s speed and vibrations to judge how fast users are running; it then speeds up the tempo of the music accordingly.

As a result, users get music that has a tempo in sync with their exercise.
