Watchkin - Watch videos without distractions

Watchkin - Watch videos without distractions | technologies | Scoop.it
Watchkin lets you watch youtube videos without all the distractions of related videos and comments, and creates a safer viewing environment for families.
John Dalziel's insight:

Watchkin is another on-line tool for "Distraction-Free" YouTube Viewing
Watchkin is a service that allows practitioners, and their learners, to watch and project YouTube videos without seeing the related sidebar content typically seen on YouTube.com.
Watchkin can be used in a number of ways. Users can...
   - enter the direct URL of a video into Watchkin to have the sidebar content removed or
   - search for videos through Watchkin and have family-friendly results displayed (if a video appears that is not family-friendly Watchkin has a mechanism for flagging it as inappropriate).
   - use the browser bookmarklet tool offered, that they can click while on YouTube to have the related content disappear from the page.
Note: Watchkin is not a work-around if a learning provider blocks YouTube and it is not a tool for downloading YouTube videos.

The Open University - Privacy Game

Have learners and/or their practitioners ever thought about what their personal information might be worth?

Privacy refers to how we maintain our personal boundaries by choosing what personal information we share with others.

This game, from The Open University Business School, is designed to highlight how privacy and consent work online.

Players make decisions about which information they reveal, who they reveal it to and why.

For example, you may decide to trade some information for gifts when shopping on a website; or you may decide to keep other information secret when posting on a social networking site.

Playing the game will prompt individuals to think about the data collected about themself, who collects it and why, and what decisions are based on those data.

John Dalziel's insight:

Safeguardiing/eSafety within most learning providers fails to highlight dangers like these...
Pay Attention
While texting-and-walking may present minor bodily threat to large inanimate objects and brisk speed-walkers, texting while driving or operating heavy machinery literally kills.
The potentially deadly practice, thankfully, is beginning to get the attention it deserves.
AT&T, in their “It Can Wait” campaign, has championed the anti-driving-and-texting initiative with videos about the dangers of driving distracted. I hope it works.

A directory of direct links to delete your account from web services. Find out how to delete your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn accounts and more.

Many companies use dark pattern techniques (see next curation) to make it difficult to find how to delete accounts.

JustDelete.me aims to be a directory of urls to enable you to easily delete an account from web services.

The links provided are colour-coded to indicate the difficulty level of account deletion:
- Green - Easy - Simple process

- Red - Hard - Cannot be fully deleted without contacting customer services
- Black - Impossible - Cannot be deleted

Click the coloured header to go to the appropriate link.

As learners become aware that their eReputation could affect their employability, and more, they may well want to delete some accounts.

As they will discover, by visiting this website, that isn't always possible.

Tina Jameson's curator insight, September 25, 2013 11:08 PM

Sounds like a useful tool to share with students and staff who feel they have 'lost some control' in their online world, and need to 'refresh' their web footprint.

Margaret Kooser's curator insight, October 2, 2013 4:15 PM

I think that this is a really good thing. While everyone knows that even when you delete something, its out there somewhere. So having something that officially deletes a specific page that you created that you lost control of is an amazing thing.

Any resource which promotes awareness of the need to be 'cyber space saavy' is worth sharing. I found this link would not open directly on the iPad. Works fine on PC.
Trevor Sokolowski's curator insight, May 12, 7:13 PM

It is our job to teach our youth at a young age the dangers of the internet. Giving your kids your credit cards to use freely on the internet is very stupid and could lead to their future and your future savings being wasted.

WHAT! I hear many say.
Practitioners just need to put the older learners into the role of carer.
What would they do to protect their children, younger brothers & sisters, their friends children and/or brothers and sisters, other younger relations etc.?
By protecting others they are raising their own awareness and, hopefully protecting a wide range of younger learners.

Bullying Prevention: Video Playlist on YouTube

Hopefully these videos will provide some good 'starters' for discussion.

Bullying is a subject that's grown increasingly complex and troubling over the years: while in-person teasing and harassment has never flagged, new technologies have given rise to cyberbullying, which can be equally as damaging -- and even more public.

And sadly news of tragic consequences, stemming from cases of both kinds, spreads quickly through social media.

It's important that learning provider stakeholders are vigilant in encouraging learners to be empathetic, and to become "upstanders" rather than bystanders.

This collection of video clips have some positive messages to share with learners, and some tools for fighting back against bullying.
