Smarty Pins: Trivia & Google Maps

Smarty Pins: Trivia & Google Maps | technologies | Scoop.it
Smarty Pins is a Google Maps based geography and trivia game.
John Dalziel's insight:

Google has released this new game called Smarty Pins which uses Google Maps for its layout.
It's a game that tests players geography and trivia skills. It could be ideal for use with learners.
Players in Smarty Pins are asked a wide variety of geography-based questions to which they have to provide answers by dragging and dropping a pin in Maps.
Scores are converted into miles and players are given 1000 miles at the start of the play .
With each incorrect answer a number of miles are subtracted from the players' score.
The trick is to answer questions as quickly as possible before the number of miles reaches zero.
First select a category. The categories available are...
   - Arts and Culture,
   - Science and Geography,
   - Sports and Games,
   - Entertainment,
   - History and Current Event.
Players will then be provided with a question.
If they find the question too hard to answer they can get help by using the "take a hint" button.
To answer the question players need to drop the pin on the correct location.
The final score you reach can be shared with others using social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English. | technologies | Scoop.it
Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English. www.chrome.com/spellup
John Dalziel's insight:

Spell Up is a new word game and Chrome Experiment that helps learners improve their English using their voice—and a modern browser, of course.
It’s like a virtual spelling bee, with a twist.
Spell Up is both fun and educational.
The goal of the game is for users to correctly spell the words they hear and stack them to build the highest word tower they can...
   - letter by letter,
   - word by word.
The higher the tower gets, the more difficult the word challenges:
They’ll be asked to...
   - pronounce words correctly,
   - solve word jumbles and
   - guess mystery words.

They can earn bonuses and coins to level up faster.

Spell Up works best in Chrome on a computer and on Android phones and tablets. (It also works on iPhones and iPads, but they’ll need to type rather than talk.)
Whether they’re just learning English or they’re already a pro, check it out!

And if you’re a practitioner, I'd encourage you to try it out in your learning environments.

Practitioners are able to use their boards over and over, and the best part is that it's free!

FunBrain

FunBrain | technologies | Scoop.it

FunBrain is the #1 site for online educational games for learners of all ages. (math, grammar, science, spelling, history)

John Dalziel's insight:

Funbrain offers several interactive educational games for use with IWBs as well as online books and comics. The games cover a range of subjects.
Funbrain contains more than 100 fun, interactive games that develop skills in maths, reading, and literacy.
A bonus for some, there are also books and comics available to read.
Many games are Flash-based and so are not iPad-friendly, unless you've added Photon Browser, but there are resources on Funbrain that will work on an iPad as well.
It would be nice if there was a “full screen” button to make them bigger, and so easier to see on an IWB.
Users can play with page zoom in their browser settings to get round this.
Functional skills practitioners should take a look around to see if there’s anything they can use.
Games are grouped by subject and also by grade, which can help to narrow things down.
