Search Education – Google

Search Education – Google | technologies | Scoop.it

Being able to use Google (and/or other search engines) effectively is a skill that all learners need to develop as early as possible.

The lesson plans available on Google Search Education might not fit every learning situation, but at the very least they provide a great framework for teaching search strategies and evaluating information found on the web.

The lesson plans are arranged according to skill level in five categories. Those categories are...

- picking search terms,

- understanding results,

- narrowing results,

- searching for evidence, and

- evaluating credibility of sources.

DEWIS - Computer Aided Assessment System

There is a wealth of information on the web site, but for me, Mark Ayton (eLearning Adviser, RSC Northwest), essentially it summarises as…
Dr Rhys Gwynllyw, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at University of the West of England has developed an application producing assessment materials that automatically grades students’ on-line submissions in the most "human like" way I've encountered.

The DEWIS e-Assessment System also provides full traceability, assessment histories and re-grading.

"Due to my practitioner experience I can see particular strengths for engineering and mathematic subjects, however other subject specialists may be equally enthusiastic about applications in their field."

Ri Channel

Ri Channel | technologies | Scoop.it

The Ri Channel is an online project by the Royal Institution showcasing the very best science videos from the Ri and around the web.

A charitable mission to “connect people to the world of science”.

Excellent stuff, and some of the videos can be embedded into a blog or VLE using a Vimeo embed code. Many provide subtitles and a full-text transcript too, which is very useful.

An excellent resource; Science practitioners should be able to find some great videos to use to supplement their lessons.

TerraClues allows practitioners to create Internet scavenger hunts, or assign already created scavenger hunts, to help learners discover new places.

Note: when practitioners create hunts, they also make them available to other practitioners and learners throughout the world.

Why not, instead of a traditional research report or poster project, have learners create their own scavenger hunts?
