280 Slides - Create & Share Presentations Online

280 Slides - Create & Share Presentations Online | technologies | Scoop.it

Having purchased a Chrome Book, I've been test-driving a few of the newest web applications to see if they’re going to help my everyday life.

While looking for an elegant web-based way to create and present slides, where there are no downloads needed, I came across 280Slides, an excellent site that has an intuitive interface.

Users can...
-import presentations from Keynote and PowerPoint,

-select a variety of themes, and

-use it anywhere because it’s cloud-based.

If you’ve used either PowerPoint or Keynote or Google Docs then you can use this application. Users can download the presentations and even publish them right to the web.

Ideal for learners who can't afford commercial software.

Transmiti - Google Translate Client

Transmiti - Google Translate Client | technologies | Scoop.it

Transmiti - Translate selected text or entire documents in no time!

Transmiti is a small (less than 800KB in download), portable Windows application that can translate selected text in any document or any Windows program without the need to open a browser window or upload the document currently being read.

Download the standalone .EXE file and run it. Highlight some text in a Word or PDF document, tap the specified hotkey and after a small delay, the translated text appears in a popup window. Users can, make the program automatically copy the translation to the clipboard and/or replace the highlighted text in the document, if editing is allowed.

Note: By default, the hotkey is set to the Windows key on your keyboard, I changed it to the F9 key. I also had some problems with the proxy settings in work but easily entered to allow it to work.

This may well be the tool learners, whose first language isn't English, are looking for to help them understand documents.

One Youtube channel that Family Learning and Science Practitioner should check out is Steve Spangler Science.

Steve's Youtube channel shares lots of big Science activities and events that he has been involved in. However, there are also a number of ‘Sick Science’ videos which feature tricks and experiments that can be played in the classroom. They’re ideal for provoking discussion about how the ‘trick’ works and talking about the Science concepts involved.

Behold | Search High Quality Flickr Images

Behold | Search High Quality Flickr Images | technologies | Scoop.it

A visual image search engine for high quality creative commons images.

When learners create multimedia projects as part of their coursework, Learning Providers require them to use either Creative Commons or Public Domain images if they don't create their own images. This reinforces the point that they cannot just grab and re-use images without regard for Copyright. Behold could help learners (and their practitioners) find quality images that meet the Creative Commons requirement.

Kindle Cloud Reader is a great tool for practitioners and learners alike, who don’t even own a Kindle.

The Kindle Cloud Reader syncs previously read pages to all devices, so users don’t need to start at the beginning every time they pick up the book on a different device.

It also...
- automagically updates itself; and
- even has an offline mode that lets users read their books when not connected to the Internet. Perfect for when users are out of wi-fi range.

Note: at the time of curating this, Kindle Cloud only works with Chrome or Safari Browsers.

MapMaker Page Maps - National Geographic Education

MapMaker Page Maps - National Geographic Education | technologies | Scoop.it
Customize one-page maps and download, email, print, or share!
This resource, from National Geographic, must have been designed with the IWB (Interactive White Board) in mind. It has an easy "touch" navigation system and it has tabs that allow users to annotate and place various icons on the map.

The map elements options also allows users to add various map details including titles, latitude and longitude lines, landmarks, and key labels. Best of all, this resource includes a full-page option to help teachers display the map as large as possible with a single touch on their IWB. There is also an option to download the final map to an image file or a PDF file.

Note: this resource is still in beta and I found that not all the features function perfectly. e.g. I wasn't able to download the map I created. However, I captured it using snippy, (on an XP Laptop) and the Snipping Tool that comes with Windows OS 7.

ShoutOmatic: Audible Shout-Outs: Stop Typing, Start Shouting! | technologies | Scoop.it

The ShoutOmatic platform lets Practitioners, Learners and other Stakeholders record short messages ("shouts") straight from their desktops and smartphones, and have them instantly delivered to others. These short "shouts" can be used in so many different ways, within the learning environment,in a more personalised way than faceless emails, texts, tweets etc.

"Shouts" are particularly suitable for educational use since they all come with their very own QR codes; providing alternative communication channels.

Many Learning providers use QR Codes for Educational Treasure Hunts, getting their learners, using their mobile devices, to learn. How about an induction tour?
